Hello! I've had a BSOD twice today, with the message "page fault in nonpaged area". I did what most people in this situation would probably do - freaked out, and typed the message into google. This page seemed like a good troubleshooting guide, so I followed its steps: http://ohonei.hubpages.com/hub/What-Is-Page-Fault-in-Nonpaged-Area

I ran checkdisk on both my C and D drives while booted in safe mode (C being a SSD, D a HDD) and both returned no errors. I tried booting my computer with one stick of RAM instead of all four, one at a time. Each one in a different RAM slot in case one of the slots was the problem (if that's even possible), and the computer booted fine every time. I then ran memtest on every stick of RAM, allowing it to run all the tests on every stick in different slots, and again - no errors. They all passed.

The BSODs happened both times while playing Mass Effect 1, a pretty old game. I never get BSODs when playing Skyrim heavily modded, or Battlefield 3 maxed out. I have set a large address aware flag for Mass Effect to enable the use of more than 2GB of RAM, and I use texmod to play the game with some higher resolution textures. My GPUs and my CPU are barely stressed at all while playing Mass Effect, hence why I assumed the RAM would be the problem - and I believe that error message with the BSOD also suggests faulty RAM? I should also note that the first thing I did was run the blend test in prime95 - stress testing both the CPU and RAM for around half an hour before trying the other tests I mentioned above.

Any idea what could be causing these BSODs? I'm really worried that it could be something more sinister like a motherboard fault... but then why would the PC crash when running an old game like Mass Effect, and not a stressful modern game like Skyrim or Battlefield? So confused!

Thanks for reading, and any help or advice would be really appreciated :)

Oh, dxdiag in case it's needed:

Anyway, all drivers up to date etc?
Since it is a single application I would suggest getting rid and installing it again, using the recommended in game settings and so on.
Page Fault..... is usually down to software trying to do something that it shouldn't. That doesnt exclude hardware issues though.

In my experience its been the HDD. download and run a scan using HDTune pro, and take a look at the health
Just installed it. Health tab says both drives are fine, but I've started running an error scan on the HDD and will check the health tab again when it finishes to see if anything changes.

GPU drivers I always keep up to date. Though I have no idea about any other drivers. Do CPUs and RAM have drivers?

Might be worth giving mem test a go, just to rule out possible ram issues:

http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
Already tried memtest extensively :p

Thanks for the link. The article author suggest using a driver repair tool to fix the issue, but since he directly links to driverexplorer.com which is a service you have to pay for, I'm wondering if he's just a sneaky advertiser.

Would a driver repair tool be a good idea? Or is it a waste of money? If they are worth the price, can you recommend a good one?

Yup, spam article, wouldn't touch with a bargepole.

Give us the full details of the next BSOD and we may be able to help more. You ought to have a stop number 0x????? and a faulting module with any luck.

I'd agree that the prime suspect is going to be graphics card drivers, but this can be almost anything.
I'd try updating the Intel chipset drivers from here:
http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/chpsts/6series-chpsts/
You might also want to try turning off hardware audio effects and pulling the X-Fi, these are nasty buggy things.

Yer stay away from that didn't see that sorry. just wanted you to read.

If it only occurs when running a hacked Mass Effect exe then that's probably the issue unless you can reproduce the bug using something else.

Your current driver is 295.73. Should try a more recent version.

download latest geforce drivers. run them, select the custom install option and select clean install.
Okay, done it. Hopefully the drivers were the issue, but on a game this old I'm not sure. Fingers crossed!

If it only occurs when running a hacked Mass Effect exe then that's probably the issue unless you can reproduce the bug using something else.
Yeah, it's just strange that replacing some textures in the game would cause my PC to crash when it's capable of performing so well under stress. I'll see how the updated drivers go.

Give us the full details of the next BSOD and we may be able to help more. You ought to have a stop number 0x????? and a faulting module with any luck.

You might also want to try turning off hardware audio effects and pulling the X-Fi, these are nasty buggy things.
The stop number was 0x0000050 (though there might be another 0 in there, so many )

X-Fi cards are bad? I thought they were top of the range sound cards for gaming? Would be a shame to just get rid of it having spend quite a bit on it... You sure they're more hassle than they are worth?

Top of the range for gaming but buggy :)
Creative supports attitude also leaves a lot to be desired.

Wouldn't necessarily suggest getting rid, but it's a possible point of failure.
