I was wondering if you guys could help.
While surfing I get a lot of 'page cannot be displayed', a quick refresh and the page loads.
My internet doesn't drop at all.
I've been using OpenDNS for my DNS but switched back to Tiscali's DNS servers just to check but I'm still having the same problem.
I know Tiscali ins't the best but I'm not paying for it at the moment.
Could it be dropped packets or something along those lines?? I also have a server monitor running which monitors some of my websites I have and this drops as well, again a quick refresh and its fine.

Thanks

are you running anything like torrents or something similar that use a large number of connections? If you haven't set it up correctly then it will be using your routers max connections and as such sometimes when you try to view a page it wont work, a refresh will generally get it through. Could also be a dodgy router setting. To check for packet loss run a ping to a webserver somewhere with -t on it eg. ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -t
and leave it running for a while.

I only run torrents when I'm not using it.

rebooted router recently?

No I haven't rebooted the router recently, do you think its worht a shot??

the connections you get from runnign torrents take a couple of days to stop, since each one will need to be told that the service is unavailable. Run peer guardian 2 and itll show you the connections that are happening. Try not running any for a few days and see if its any better. It could be the ISP mucking around with your connection because of torrents.

When PipeX finally started doing it to my line it took me a while to realise since i thought as long as i wasnt running the torrents it would be fine. After 2-3 days of not running anything like that my net would be absolutly fine, as soon as i started them again, within around 30 minutes itd be rubbish again.

Although you say your on vista, so PG2 wont work :(

I'd only use a non standard DNS server if you are having issues. Did you leave a ping running to a site such as www.overclockers.co.uk?
when youw ant results press ctrl + break to see a stats list or ctrl + c to stop it and display stats.

You could see if there is a reg hack for vista that is available to set your max half open tcp/ip connections to more than 12 (i think in vista). Once i put this up to 50 (from 10) on XP it sorted out a lot of these issues. I imagine if you read the information from the xp one you can translate that into your vista reg...using your brain, not actually translating it.
