It depends what you use your PC for really, the pagefile isn't going to get used if you have 8GB ram but only ever browse the internet/use email and play games. If you tend to multitask and/or use software which doesn't have an upper limit on memory usage then it can be quite important to have. For example, if you are doing a lot of photo editing, you could accidentally open up one too many images, without the pagefile you are likely to get an out of memory error followed by the program closing, losing all your work in the process. With the pagefile enabled and set to a usable size, things will slow down a lot before any crashing occurs, which gives you a nice warning that you have too much stuff open.
If you set the pagefile too small then it doesn't have enough space to actually swap anything out. I would think 2-4GB is a safe amount for most people, if you set it to 500MB then you might as well turn it off.
I would imagine the hibernate file generates a lot more SSD wear than the pagefile if you use sleep/standby.
