Awesome news. Loved the first game.
The unabashedly old-school FPS series Painkiller is making a comeback, with the appropriately titled Painkiller: Resurrection set for release on the PC in the fourth quarter of this year.
The first details on the new game come via IGN, which reports it's being developed by Homegrown Games (meaning original developer People Can Fly have nothing to do with it). The game will put players in the role of CIA assassin Wild Bill Sherman, who -- plagued by a nagging conscience -- is killed at the start of the game after attempting to stop an explosion he set up himself. As in the past games in the series, Sherman ends up in Purgatory, where he's conscripted into an ongoing battle between the forces of Heaven and Hell. Naturally, this means shooting the crap out of tons and tons of monsters.
Unlike past games, though, it appears the player will play for both sides of the conflict, as they both seek Sherman for their cause. Another new addition to the series will be a co-op mode, where gamers can play through the single-player campaign with a friend. There will, of course, also be standard competitive multiplayer features.
Again, Painkiller: Resurrection is currently scheduled for release on the PC at the end of the year, and IGN further reports that an Xbox 360 port is being considered after that.
