Paint flashing?

What a weekend I've had!!

Decided to paint the spare bedroom (our office basically) grey, and has turned into an utter nightmare. Basically the paint dries a different shade of grey dependant on what you use to put it on with.

I did the tops of the skirting board, and just under the ceiling with a brush and then used a roller for the big areas. There was a few little marks left, so I went over these with a brush.

It's dried horrible. It's all different shades of grey! I've done lots of painting over the years and never seen this issue before. Can't understand it.

Anyways, ended up putting on three coats and looks even worse! Last night I applied a line in the middle of a wall with a brush just as a test. It's dried light grey! WTF

I've searched on google, and think it's what's known as paint flashing. The recommendation is to paint it again (which I have)

anyone had this problem before? If I could roller the entire lot I would, but you can't get the roller everywhere.

The paint is crown matt emulsion city grey. First time I've used crown paint.

Thanks

I was wrong, it's called picture framing.....can kinda see why

Trick is to use a mini roller and go as high up as you can......never had to do this before Grrrrr

Depends on the paint and your style. Usually when cutting in it causes a drag, can either be too little paint compared to the roller or too much (as though there is 1 less or more coat).

Another coat should do it as the opacity should become similar.

Another tip is with really annoying paint, make your cutting in a much wider band and "feather" the paint vertically. Then when you roll the wall it will blend seamlessly. I normally only have to do this with really hard to use paints though.

Stick with Johnstones trade and never have to deal with this rubbish again.

well I'm on coat number four at the minute, if I stick the edges on thick they look darker, then I roller and they look lighter lol

never using crown again, utter crap

did my lounge with dulux and looked perfect after one coat

I got around this by using the brush to cut in and then going over the brush strokes using the roller to get as close as I possibly could to the ceiling. You've got to be prepared to get a tiny bit on the ceiling and paint over it afterwards unless you've got a very steady hand.

I've been applying the same kind of colour in my dining room over the past few days and noticed a similar effect, although nowhere near as pronounced. Dulux Warm Pewter actually.

I did similar to what's suggested above, cutting in with a brush then going over it with a roller right up to the edge. I used a combination of low tack masking tape and a piece of card to stop the sides of the roller catching the ceiling or adjacent walls.

It's a nightmare

anyway so yesterday....bought a 4" roller and repainted the wall from top to bottom with a combination of small and larger rollers. Now the colour is uniform.
Next problem! Due to the 25+ degree heat the paint is drying far too fast meaning sometimes I am going over paint with the roller when it's starting to slightly go off. I'm talking within 5 minutes!

anyway, any other paint would be fine but not this crown crap. It's dried and looks ok.....but I'm a bit of a perfectionist and it's annoying me

am I being too picky, or does the wall need coat number 6?

Sand the wall. Then paint it again, as you cut in go over it with a roller. Then paint the rest of the wall.

It's quite hot to paint so know what you mean about it drying. Today is a bit cooler tho

Sanding again!! Argh. To be honest, if I'd known how much of a pain it is to get a perfect finish I'd have paid the £300 a day rate for a professional. By the time I've finished buying more paint I'd have spent that anyway.

I'll do the rest of the walls, and if I've got any left over I might go over it again.

Five coats though! must be a record. I might just leave it though, as I know if I paint it again ensuring the same colour top to bottom, and getting nice coverage there will be a third problem tomorrow to sort. The never ending bedroom.

I've skipped the paint I bought for the kids bedrooms. Never EVER buying crown again. Even their gloss isn't very good, it's like porridge.

Getting there!

My cheap 4" roller has been amazing!

Used frog tape and basically painted the entire room with a damn 4" roller. Went fast as hell making sure I absolutely loaded the paint on.

It's drying and I can already tell it's nigh on perfect.

10 litres to cover a 3m x 2.5m bedroom lol > I'm surprised the walls havent started warping.

The amount of money I've spent, I could have bought a £90 5l tin of little greene and had done with it. Now THAT'S an impressive paint. 3% sheen, that's an OCD'ers dream paint.

Only thing that make happen with so many coats is some cracks as it cures. Make sure you have some left over for touching up

I’ve been using b and q’s Own paint in my bathroom and it’s decent enough

I find the best way is to cut in the edges , feathering out to where the roller will meet, let dry a day

Roller the rest and let dry, then repeat the whole process

No picture framing effect on my walls at all

If it’s drying too fast try mixing in a small amount of water , never go over the same area either, if it’s going off it can cause you to lift the paint of the previous coat

Tried feathering it out too but it still changes colour. Leaving it a day is terrible advice with this paint. I touched a dried wall with a wet paint brush and now have a dark patch on the wall. It's THAT bad. Never had this issue with any other paint.

The only way of making this look good is by quickly painting it all on with a roller as fast as you can.

To be honest, I should have quit at the weekend and bought something else.

Just a bit of an update, I'm painting my sons bedroom at the minute and have decided to go all out and buy Dulux Trade Diamond Matt. It's £70 a tin for the colour mix (that's with trade discount), but I used it the other night and it's bloomin' brilliant.
Will stick some before and after pics up once it's finished.

I use to use Dulux Endurance but I think they stopped making it. This trade diamond stuff is the next one up, and it's fantastic.

You do get what you pay for!

Once I have painted the whole house, I'll redo the office again with it.

I now just use a mini roller where ever you can, and just brush for the bits you cannot be accurate enough with
I did have to switch to a more expensive mini roller as I was getting a different finish from a cheapo, vs a decent large roller.

A better one saves time anyway so its probably worth it

I also had similar issues with framing, but no where near as bad as here. I have switched now so i try to work like when using sheen paints, Ie keep a wet edge
So I am constantly switching between brush/mini/large roller and working around. Just requires a little thought on where to start, i find this dramatically reduces any issues with paint. I found the endurance type paints can suffer a similar framing, or surface difference if you allow part to dry then try to blend into it.
Its also a little less repeatative not having to just do miles of edging in one go.
