Well, done a fair bit of painting and decorating in my time, and i always thought Crown used to be a decent brand....not anymore!

Have bought the big old tub of white matt emulsion and i am devastated at how many coats it is taking to go over some prepped off white walls and ceilings, and some filled dents.

The coverage is shockingly bad. Think i am just going to bin the 25Ltr tub.

I tend to use dulux trade for wood undercoat and finish, but was hoping something a bit more economical on emulsion for large white areas.

Any recommendations?

Leyland seems to be getting decent reviews on screwfix, anyone tried it?

Assuming you're after cheap...I bought No Nonsense matt white emulsion from Screwfix to do a few walls and prep some plaster, and it seems great tbh.

I've just used Dulux in 2 rooms and all ceilings in my 3 bed. Used 22.5 litres to do the whole house, with just 2 coats required. Which included some 50/50 coats for new plaster as well.

Currently £17 for 10L from B&Q

Johnstones Covaplus, you'll look at one good coat of that stuff and wonder if you need a second.

It's more expensive but you use less and in less time.

No

Farrow and ball if you want mediocre paint and a tint of white no other normal shop has and called elephants tear mist

To be fair, the F&B colour chart is pretty nice and is a great go-to chart for a pretty good shortlist of shades which weed out a lot of the inbetweens, their website has some pretty good advice to... but... when it comes to getting those colours, my local jonstones has the same F&B chart to hand too and they will mix the 'colours' for you; choose flat matt if you want the F&B 'look' I could never bring myself to paying F&B prices

don't get me wrong - a colour is a colour is a colour, I don't believe the'res some kind of magic about their colour chips, I just think it's a pretty good ballpark and doesn't overwhelm you with choice.

another vote for covaplus here though! I don't think the standard brillaint white its the last word in covering/hiding ability but it's a joy to use and work with. I'd not even bother with anything else now. The tinted covaplus that you have mixed up is really good!

Never had a problem with Johnstones Paints. If you find a good stockist they can colour match to the Farrow and Ball chart too.

If you find a stockist who can't then get them to ring "Sally in the office!" "Sally in the office" knows all colours!

I had the same experience with Crown last year. We threw it out and went back to Duluxe.

Do remember that like Nescafe there's different white emulsions for the Homebases of the world just as there's a different Nescafe instant coffee for the pound shops.

Covaplus always get rave reviews. Currently using Dulux trade brilliant white and its done a good job also. Woodwork i always use sikkens rubbol
