My plaster has finally dried and got around to mist coating it with some Leyland Contact Matt.

Looking to sort out the final finish coats for the ceiling and do the walls but having gone to my local trade shops the choice seems endless from years gone by.

I am looking for a clean flat matt finish for the ceiling to avoid any roller marks and a durable paint for the walls so we can clean/wipe them incase the kids trash them.

Also need to do the new banister and all the door frames so looking to go water based for this. Any ideas on the primer, finish and something to feed the knots?

Can anyone who has recently painted recommend some options from either Johnstones, Dulux, Armstead or any of the online paints such as Isomat, Caparol or Tikkurila.

I just want a simple clean flat matt finish ideally for it all.

Cheers.

Dulux Trade Diamond Matt for the walls. Easily washable. Buy it online and not from the shops to save a fortune, unless you just want white in which case b&q are cheapest.

Remember, you can't have flat matt (0 sheen) and washable. This is probably as flat as you'll get whilst also being able to keep clean.

If you are doing it yourself, poor into a big bucket, add a bit of water and mix well. Don't use straight out the tin as it's too thick and will dry within seconds.

Woodwork, I usually go with dulux onecoat. Avoid dulux quick dry gloss.....it's awful stuff.

Anything that is ‘tough’ for walls won’t be a great mat finish all the tough paints have a slight sheen to them it’s how they work.

for the wood work any diy store will sell you some sealer for the knots I wouldn’t worry about brand then I would buy a primer and undercoat 2in1 from which ever paint brand you choose. Avoid duplication quick dry satin wood like the plague it never really dries and remain sticky years later.

Dulux Trade Durable Flat Matt for walls other than bathrooms, still wipeable and less sheen than the Diamond Matt.

Depending on how knotty the wood is you can either cover it all with Zinsser BIN, ideally sprayed on if you can mask everything else off. If it's only the odd knot then spot brush the Zinsser on and then undercoat over the top of it all with some oil based undercoat. You can top coat with water based but it's all pretty awful other than it staying white. If the frames are bare mdf then use some mdf sealer before anything else.

Ceilings I've used ordinary Dulux Matt emulsion, Dulux Magic White and No Nonsense Contract Matt Emulsion Brilliant White 10L from Screwfix. Both the Dulux products dry too fast although the Magic White I still favour for bathrooms as its more wipeable than the No Nonsense stuff. However, the No Nonsense stuff I now favour everywhere else as it has a more chalky finish and dries more matt and stays wetter longer when laying it off so it knits together well with previously laid down areas. It's no good for walls as it would mark too easily but is ideal for ceilings.

Could also be worth looking at Zinsser AllCoat for the wood top coating in the water based version and it's self undercoating.

Ended up going with Johnstone's Acrylic Durable Matt as got a good offer via their shop and it has left a decent finish after a couple of coats.
The ceilings used Johnstone's Covaplus which wasn't too bad and all the wood work started in Dulux Trade and is sticking well enough over the Zinsser BIN.
