At the side of my house (in a close) we have an allocated parking space and the one next to it belongs to a neighbour. We also have a 2 car car port which is where we park our cars at night. However, we use the other space to unload shopping etc and at weekends when family/friends come to stay. All the neighbours know this is our space but still some try it on and park there or there friends park there.

There's nothing to say who these spaces belong to though so I'm thinking of getting the house number painted onto our space. If I did this what would be the best paint to use and is there any place I could get a number stencil so it doesn't look like it's been painted by a kid.

I feel bad about asking people not to park there sometimes as we have the car port but then on the other hand it's my property and the space belongs to me so if I want to leave it empty I should be able to. Parking is such a big thing nowadays but I also don't want to alienate my neighbours who are mostly pretty good.

If you have anywhere to stick one, maybe stick up a sign saying ie. "No Parking, Private Drive" ? Would be easier to do and more noticable I'd guess.

we have a spray can of the stuff at work ,i.e permanent road marking paint ,so they do make it ,maybe even b&q have it,not sure

Are the car parking places you want to lay clain to on your property title deeds or is it communal?

They are on my deeds. I could put up a sign like suggested but I doubt if anyone would take any notice of it. I'm not too sure if they'd even take any notice if I painted a number on it though.

if you do want to mark the road use survey line marking paint. It wont come off in a hurry, but id use yellow and not white.

I've seen some people install their own bollards - is this an option?

I did think of this but then I think am I going too far? If people actually knocked on my door and asked if it was okay to park there I'd say fine if I knew no-one was coming to visit and we weren't going to be parking there ourselves.

You could try leaving one of your cars in the space, and the other in the car port?

Although, that wouldn't stop people parking there when you were out.

Maybe you should just start using the space when you know you are going out again that day. IE not over-night. I suppose at the moment, they just see it as a 'spare' parking space but if you seen using it then they might not see it that way.

In my opinion, the best solution would be a sign and polite letter/conversation with neighbours. I doubt most people would even consider a number painted on the ground if they were thinking of parking there.

Common-or-garden masonry paint is fine.

It does generally work as well: my estate has a load of private spaces, and once they get numbered other people usually stay off them.

Good old Roman style a la Sulla - heads on spears. That really puts people off.

Wheelclamp.

Paint an inverted pentacle with a goat's head on the parking space.
