Hi. Been thinking of painting my white Georgian effect single garage door. One those canopy garage doors with 9 squares on it.

what is the process of best / type of paint to use ?
Thanks.

I just recently did mine in the good weather we had last week.

Depending on the condition of your door will determine how much prep you need to do. Mine wasn't great so I sanded back the flat panels with a machine sander with p120, did the vertical grooves by hand. Any areas where the paint had flaked off I tried to flatten the edges to disguise it.

Be careful not to sand too aggressively as most doors are galvanised steel and it's easy to scrub through that layer exposing bare steel, which could promote rusting later on.

Once happy with the surface, I vacuumed it down and begun priming it with two coats of Zinnser Bullseye 123 using a 4" Axus HD foam roller which gives a nice smooth finish. After that put an undercoat of Leyland Trade Fast Dry Undercoat. Followed by three coats of Farrow and Ball Exterior Eggshell (20% sheen) gives a really nice finish and dries within a couple hours too. As usual sand between coats as and when required.

Edit: Got a couple photos, should have done a before and after really. But it was quite a dark blue before hence why it took so many coats to cover. Colour is Farrow and Ball Pigeon. Window sills are my next job. :)
