My desk is an unpainted MDF self built job.

I want it black.

Whats the best wat to go about it. I have a mouse sander, so sandings not a prob, but what would you use to paint it?

MDF soaks up a lot of paint, particularly on the edges. I can't see how anything could do a proper job in one coat to be honest. Maybe on the faces, but if you want the edges to look good too I'd highly recommend a suitable primer first, preferably a few coats with sanding in between.

A few years ago I built a toy box for my son. Two rounds of mdf primer and two coats of dulux black satinwood and it still looks as good as new today.

OK, if I do a couple of coats of MDF primer, is this paint suitable for a desk?

I've just checked the tin and that's exactly what I used on this toy box, amongst other things. I thought it was Dulux but clearly not :D

That International paint that Mark has linked to looks interesting. That company makes extremely good products so I'd expect it to be very good.

P.S. Pictures when you're finished if you would please. I'm thinking of fabricating my own desk and need inspiration :)

To seal the cut/exposed end grain use shellac. It does a fantastic job of sealing the grain and will save you having to put 1 million litres of primer on it to try and seal it.

Can see anything wrong with that paint.

I found painting mdf with a mini roller & emulsion sleeve you get lovely finish with no brush marks.

But. I would then give desk a couple coats of a satin polyurethane varnish to protect the finish, against Heat, water & scratches.
Id highly reccomend a yacht varnish like this.

Pretty tough stuff, another id highly reccomend is ronseals diamond coat floor varnish. Incredibly durable stuff, but pretty expensive.
