Hi all,

My brother is wanting to get in to warhammer etc again, and whilst I've accumulated a lot of paints/tools over the years, I don't really know where to start with what a beginning should have. Can you guys list some of the things you'd consider essential, or even better if you know of "start kits"?

Things I already have my eyes on are things like the Modelcraft 15 piece toolkit available on Amazon, as I have it myself and know it's a decent starter kit. Things like basing materials, spray paints, paint kits, washes, brushes etc is what I'm after.

Ta!

Games Workshop do starter kits but they get expensive, fast. If you're looking for better value then Army Builder do decent themed starter sets.

What you need is (in my opinion):

- Undercoat spray (most people prefer black)
- A dozen or so paints
- A couple of brushes - a big one for base colours and a smaller one for detailing
- Glue (super glue or plastic cement if you're only building plastic models)
- Clippers for cutting pieces off the sprues
- Sharp knife

Yeah that's much like I'm thinking. Hadn't thought of checking the Army Painter kits, thanks - I'll check those out too!

What brushes do you use? I hear GW ones are a bit pants.

As far as brushes, I'd look at getting one of these 3 options for starters:

The Wamp brushset
The Broken Toad brushset
Some Rosemary & Co brushes (Series 33, size 1 and 2 would be a good start)

I haven't used the Broken Toad ones but they are very highly regarded, the other two I use on a day to day basis. Windsor & newton Series 7 are great too but more expensive.

As far as paint sets go I think it's better just to pick some colours, or get a few of the Scale 75 sets.

I recently bought some bits to paint my Relic busts.

I'd definitely recommend checking eBay for some used paints... I picked up around 30 Citadel pots (all at least half full, some unused, all good) for £16 delivered and included a decent mix of colours along with a few washes. I then grabbed some brushes from artsupplies.co.uk - two of the Pro Arte miniature brushes and a couple from their value kolinsky range, all have been great for the money.

I've since bought a few more paints from the local Games Workshop store for any colours i was missing/fancied.

I also bought some grey primer from Halfords which i think was around £7 which did the job nicely.

I guess as with everything it all depends on your budget.

All ordered, let's see how he gets on with it all :) got some of those Rosemary and Co brushes for myself too, so hopefully they turn out a good investment!

Got him a Tau Fireteam to work on first, as he loves their styling.

I recently paid a bit extra to get a good quality detail brush, and it's made a huge difference compared to the cheap brushes I was using before that came in a collection pack. Just make sure you read up on how to take good care of your brushes so that your investments last!

Thanks for this thread! I think I'm gonna go with an Army Painter starter. Getting my hands on Arcadia Quest has been the kicker. These beauties NEED to be painted! :D
