Hey all,

I've bourght all the stuff to build a server, however when I went to buy a case It was VERY hard to find a case which would fit the rare EATX (extended atx) form factor. Anyway, I found one second hand but it is very old and tatty. I want to paint it black and give it a nice finish.

Some pics can be found here:

Anyway, I want to repaint it and do it up. So, I looked over the net for some tutorials on how to do this. I started off by following this tutorial:

However, many of the things he use's I couldnt find in halfords, homebase of B&Q (or at least not in my area). However, I got hold a mouse sander and some grey plastikote primer. I sanded it down to the metal and applied the primer with four coats.

The problem is, I cant find a decent paint to go onto it. He uses Plastikote, I couldnt find the exact same paint that he use's on the internet or in one of the local DIY stores. Would anyone suggest an alternative? Perhaps with a website like? I want to get this thing up and running so I can play with some linux & freebsd :)

I really dont deal witht hat kind of paint my self, i might have a while ago though ! but from what i can remember, halfords rattle cans are acctually very good.

Don't be fooled by all of these 'double acrylic, takes half the amount of paint jobbies' just take your time, aim for full coverage on the 3rd coat and you cant go wrong :)

Again, i'm no expert with rattle cans !

Unless you have all the equipment you can forget about a mirror finish + time and patience is definitely needed .

This pic shows the bottom half of the panel after using rubbing compound which isnt too bad a finish .

1 - halfords primer
2 - halfords paint of choice
3 - wet & dry 600 - 1000 - 1500
4 - clean cloths
5 - sanding block ( be very careful on the edges if you use one )
6 - halfords rubbing compound ( does the same job as that 3m stuff in that tutorial )
