Seems the attorney general has made some borderline racist remarks? I can understand that coming from a culture where corruption is rife and telling lies to save face is the norm might mean that a community of people in the UK from that culture might find it hard to drop these ideas. It does however seem a bit odd for a senior figure to highlight it... especially with gems like this:

But the Telegraph says when he was asked if he was referring to the Pakistani community, Mr Grieve said: "Yes, it's mainly the Pakistani community, not the Indian community."

I mean corruption is pretty bad in India too so why the distinction - are Pakistanis really *that* bad?

Yeah, I don't think he should have mentioned it. Is protecting democracy and pointing out proven problems with certain cultural differences really worth it?

That's outrageous, the corruption isn't because they're Pakistanis.

It's because they're Muslim.

Just kidding.

Do not get thy panties in a twist.

I wonder what corruption is like in Romania.

stories like this always make me wonder if they are trying to deflect attention from something else , there's probably more corruption in the government than some Pakistani community

Hah. Well put. Was about to say something like this.

I could line up 50 non-Pakistani non-Muslim people who'd vouch that I'm one of the most trustworthy people they know. Therefore that MP is full of **** like all other MPs.

A friend tells me it isn't great, I recall a while back, if I understood correctly, him saying they raised the amount you needed to steal to be convicted of serious theft/fraud, so now they can get caught having benefited far greater from corruption and still only be guilty of a petty offence.

I've almost lost count of the amount of programmers I've been acquainted with that were from Romania, there seems to be a fair amount of brain power out that way. I've made sure that at least one person gets to enjoy the Daily Mail headlines that extol the virtues of their compatriots.

I wonder, I haven't spoken to my friend from Pakistan for a while, if I asked him would he say it was anti-Pakistani BS or instead say that it was about right. He did tend to blow hot and cold regarding the community in the UK.

What, Britain? The only real difference about the corruption in the UK is that the Ruling Classes have managed to restrict it to the rich, powerful and/or connected. At least in Pakistan the middle classes get a bite at the cherry.

There seems to be a lot of negative focus on this community recently with the child exploitation and now this.

If the comments are true the Mps from the community should be educating the people not saying these comments are racist.

Used to work for one of the major phone companies. We had a huge number of Pakistani staff and at one point my job solely became one of checking every customer account they'd gone in to ensure its integrity. They'd been found to access friends and families accounts or get a Pakistani colleague to do so in order to put huge discounts on or monthly credits often taking it to the extent whereby the network was paying them each month!
We also found that in terms of credits or phone replacements handed out they were on average more generous with other Pakistani Brits. Ironically the welsh were more stingy towards their own countrymen! Quite a few we're sacked for fraud as a result. That's the Pakistanis not the welsh btw.
We also had a problem with 'phone shops' in places like Bradford specifically instructing customers how to fleece the system. These tended to be Pakistani run and staffed. Customers would call with certain faults with their handsets or iPads which would guarantee them a replacement whilst keeping their old one, a rarity as they normally had to be returned for fault analysis, confirmation and refurbishment. Yet these rare codes were very common with customers from these third party stores.

Dis86 I lived in Edinburgh most of my life and I am friends with a lot of Pakistanis but that's my experience of them as well, most are not bad people and don't wish harm to anyone, but if they can make a quick buck by fleecing the system then they will do it.

Dis86 that is the kind of thing the AG is getting at.

The community acts together to get as much out of the 'system' as possible. This may be accepted as the norm in Pakistan but not here, hence the comments.

When they are called up on it the spokespeople use the racist card.

Someone explained to me the idea of "society of strangers" Western societies have developed a rule of law where the law is "mostly" blind to relationships and as if we were all strangers. Other countries and cultures haven't moved beyond the tribal relationship in law and business. This nepotism is probably a more efficient system where the rule of law is weak and the state cannot impartially enforc its will. Western cultures have typically been abe to impose the rule of the state and thus impartial law.

Our process is equally alien to other cultures sometimes.

I can't remember if the society of strangers was one of Nial Fergusson "killer apps" that explained the relative success of Western style cultures.

I wouldn't be surprised, running businesses on merit and so on rather than nepotism and doing mates favours is much more efficient and productive.
