Firstly, hi. Secondly, sorry if this should have gone in CPUs, but I thought that given the likely nature of a fix, the overclocking forum would be the place to post this. Now, onwards...

My computer has a 2.5 GHz P4 (533 MHz FSB, 19x multiplier). My housemate gave me his 3.06 GHz P4 (presumably at 533 MHz, which seems to be the retail spec, and with a 23x multiplier). Grand, thought I. I whipped out the slower chip and inserted the new(er) one. The problem is that the 3 GHz CPU is only running at 1.5 GHz off a 400 MHz FSB (15x). Do any of you helpful people know why the faster chip is running so horribly underclocked, when the rest of my system should be quite capable of supporting it? And of course, any suggested solutions would be great, but they should bear in mind that my computer is mostly a factory-spec Fujitsu, with a BIOS that has no overclocking features whatsoever.

have you considered that the bios could be locked down so a cpu change isnt possible, put your old chip back in to see do you get 2.5GHz back

what are you using to record the clockspeed btw?

sounds like the 3.06ghz cpu could have the 800mhz bus which suggests your mobo doe'nt support it
Edit
Possibly solveable with a bios update.

3.06ghz cpus deffo had the 533fsb, that's how it wound up with such an odd clockspeed.

I reckon its a BIOS update if you're lucky.

The BIOS being locked is what I'm afraid of :(. The BIOS is the most up to date version I could find (still a good few years old though) and has been re-set twice since I upgraded the chip; once to remove a password I'd forgotten and the second time after an attempted soft-clock seemingly went wrong (that shaved a good few months off my lifespan I'm sure). I've been using CPUz to get the values. So I guess it looks like I'm unlucky and should put the 2.5GHz back in?

Sounds like the BIOS is just falling back to a lowest default to me, ie 15x100. Go and set the values to what they should be manually 23x133 i guess.
