Palit Gamerock 1070 Premium vs Non-Premium

Hi all,

Im putting a new system together and have settled on the 1070 being the right GPU for me, however I am a little stuck on which one I should be choosing.

Ive read about the heat issues on some EVGA's, and some of the more well known branded cards OC'ing and performing similar or sometimes worst to their cheaper and less known competitors. Ive specifically read that the difference in cards is very small and basically all of them can hit 2ghz OC easily and the main variation is in temperature.

I saw a thread on this forum praising the Palit Gamrock 1070 Premium, both for its cooler and price, what I want to know is why would I buy the Premium edition for £20-30 more than the base edition if I plan on manually OC'ing a bit anyway?

As far as I can see the card id physically identical, same cooling, backplate, RGB lighting (not actually something I care about), connectivity etc. The only noticible difference I can see is the default factory OC is higher.

Could anyone shed any light on my questions, I havent bought a new card in 3~ years and not an Nvidia since the 580 GTX.

Thanks!

The difference is currently £60 @ OCUK. I'd just buy the basic edition and as you say, OC it.

Bit of a relative bargain at £380.

Yea, I was quoting the lowest prices I had found at another large online retailer, my bad.

Thanks for the opinion, am I right in thinking they are the same card with only a difference in factory OC speeds?

I think that's the case.

Got mine for just over £400. I was considering the Zotac Amp Extreme for about the same price, but I don't think it would have fitted into my case (just a tad too long).

I'm very pleased with the card so far. A recent BIOS update has improved it a little. The fans don't spin up until 60C, which makes the card totally silent for desktop use. When the fans are running they are quiet, and never go over 1000rpm (around 38%) during gaming. Temperature reaches a max of about 63C playing games such as Witcher 3, GTA V etc. I chose the Palit after reading a few reviews of various cards. I liked the look of the beefy cooler on the Palit, the dual BIOS, and the high factory overclock on GPU and memory. The only negative aspects of the card are the looks (doesn't bother me, as I look at my screen when I'm using my PC) and the "short" 2 year warranty. My theory is that if the card lasts 6 months, it'll probably last 5 years or more.

I would therefore recommend the Gamerock or Gamerock Premium versions of this card, based on my experience so far. These cards seem very well built and the cooler certainly is as good as anything I`ve seen on other cards. The factory overclock on the premium makes it about the fastest GTX1070 "out of the box". The only real issue is the warranty. If you're happy with 2 years, rather than 3 or 5 years that some other manufacturers offer, then the Palit cards are a good choice. Personally I wouldn't touch an EVGA card with the ACX 3.0 cooler, even with the thermal pad modifications. It seems that their cooler is a poor design. You do get a 5 year warranty, but I'd prefer a card that seems to have been properly designed in the first place.

I agree with Dervious although I really like the look of mine and the colour scheme fits in with my build but that of course is personal choice, the card performs great and is nigh on silent, also they are dual Bios and I didn't realise this when my first Bios flash did not go to plan but there is a switch at the front of the back plate to switch :D between the two.

Yea I can see why the colours could annoy people, though I think a build around that scheme could look great, albeit very hard to find matching parts.

Luckily (or not) my case is an old Cosmos S and it cost far too much at the time to throw it into the attic and get a new one with a window :P, and it just has a grill on the side that is more or less non see through.

Ill probably just buy the base card and save the extra money and OC it up to 2ghz, 2 years should be enough for me, the retailer I normally buy high price items from accepts out of warranty returns within reason, probably due to the amount I spend there each year.

Thanks for the input guys, appreciate it!
