Palit Sonic OC GTX 580 issues

Seen another post where Palit have had a recall due to faulty overclocks. I suspect that yours is part of a duff batch.

Get in touch with OCUK and get a refund dude and get the Gigabyte/MSI version, any version but Palit :) Right now...

Hope that helps.

Looks like I made the right choice switching to an msi version. I cant say i trust Palit much after this and the GTX 460 heatsink problem, unfortunately it looks like they might be a manufacturer to avoid in the future :(

DragonRR what are your temps mate?

Im concerned because i just dropped my gtx 580 sonic in. Idling its only like 38-40C & my room is pretty cold. Yet when i run vantage, heaven, sf4, im seeing temps as high as 89C! I thought these things were only meant to get to around 80C tops in games & that dam well be while testing in a warmer room than im in I can assure you.

Im real concerned how if im hitting these temps now how this card would survive in summer temps seeing as the threshold is meant to be like 95C.

I cannot see how Palit could not see this on simple testing, or maybe we have duff batch?

I have a Palit GTX 580 Sonic bought from OC and installed yesterday. I've been running all the games I normally run, ARMA 2, Crysis, BC2, MW2, F1 2010 etc and haven't had any issues yet, fingers crossed. I suppose I haven't really stressed the card yet but then I don't run any benchmarks as no matter how much I spend and overclock, someone always runs a benchmark with double your scores with the same hardware! The only problem I had with the upgrade was that somehow, the Mb's bios reset to default values and I couldn't remember the OC Vcore I had set on the CPU.

Can you give us your idle & load temps during your more stressful games? I've tried running crysis benchmark twice now but both times crashed out despite strangily now having such high temps.

I've got a bad cold so the room is really warm. My idle temperature is 38 and when I loop Farcry 2 at maximum settings it goes up to 75. The first time I tried it the GPU crashed and recovered so I reduced the OC to 772. The max temp at 772 was 74. I went back to default 835 and this time I didn't get any crashes however it goes to show that it isn't a stable overclock. I'll probably keep the card as under normal use it runs fine and if it does start to crash I'll reduce the OC slightly.

Well im getting weird issues. My temps seem to be improving, now idling 33C! And when i tried to run cryssi & farcry 2 bench marks i think they were going to the 70s but like i said, they crashed out with display error. May try run vantage again to see what temps i get. Then might try drop clocks to 800mhz to see what happens/.

EDIT: Still high temps in vantage of 87C, too high for how cool this room is. This card just doesnt seem very stable. Worried may need to RMA.

I had a quick look at Palit's website and I see that the 580 GTX Sonic is no longer listed. I'm sure it was listed yesterday. I wonder if OC have had any communication from Palit regarding a manufacturers recall ?

Well tried 5 mins of crysis now & i crashed out. Temps 88C. Thing doesnt seem stable at all. How could this get past testing in "warm testing labs" of palit. Not impressed & feeling like asking the company i bought from to get a driver out here to take it back. I want my money back & i dont expect inconvience.

Dont RMA it as you will more than likely get it sent back and charged for testing. Send it back under distance selling act as its under 7 days old.

I consider anything over 80c to high for a GFX card. After that I'm looking at ways to lower the temps.

I've reduced the OC to 801 using MSI Afterburner and it seems stable now although it's only in benchmarks, Farcry 2 and F1 2010 now, that it was crashing. According to MSI Afterburner, the default volts are 1062 which I'm not going to touch. The highest temps I've seen is 75 and with the Core Clock at 801, the idle temps have dropped to 33 (from 38 @ 835). I think Palit have just increased the Core Clock in the bios, stuck an extra sticker on the box, charged a bit extra and laid claim to having the first factory overclocked 580. I'll probably keep mine in the optimistic hope that they actually used a 'good' chip which is capable of a little overclocking albeit not to 835.

Well i dropped core to stock 777mhz, temps barely budged & still reached 87C peak. My volts are 1025mv. My idle temps are very good obviously at like 33C even on 835mhz. It cant handle getting stressed though :(

EDIT: Crysis on default 777mhz core still crashing out after 2-5mins or so with temps getting to 87C. Newest drivers havent helped either.

Wow.. Only checked the thread this morning.. been a fair bit of news since then!

I've been running at 782/2004(4008) since the issue last night (small oc). The volts are strange really. When I reboot with the profile I have set in the startup the volts should be about 1024 but looking right now they are 1000 and the actual reading on the graph (I'm running Kombustor whilst typing this) is 0.978v. I'm not sure what the issue is with the volts.. Maybe Afterburner doesn't set the volts in the startup.. Not sure. But then a default of 1000mv seem very low to me.

My temps (right now whilst running Kombustor) are flat at 77deg, fan speed at 57% atm.

My temps seem to idle around 44deg once the system has warmed. I've been playing COD Blackops MP tonight for an hour or so and 44deg was the reading I noticed after loading up this forum and then checking the idle temp.

Not sure what to do about this recall.. Might wait and see what happens. Might just need a BIOS flash.

LOL at the Palit Sonic at the top of the pyramid... Well I guess I had about a 1 in 4 chance :)

Probably that top palit is yours:D:D:D

Imagine how many times did it fall.

I just checked the little white sticker on the front of my Palit and it's on exactly the same place. oh why do I get the mountain climbing Palit?
