I exercised my rights today and returned my Xpertvision 8800GT today within the cool off period (I shall not mention suppliers name), after having the problems I documented in this thread. I had no problems getting my money back thankfully, and I replaced it with an Asus EN8800GT (also has a large cooler bolted on).
When I got home I removed all traces of the drivers, Ntune, and Rivatuner in safe mode, restarted and installed the newest drivers and Rivatuner. To my dismay I still wasn't getting fan control or temperatures. After some research on the Asus support forums, and it seems they've released a new version of Smartdoctor to combat the problem. Although clunky it works and seems to be giving me both fan control and temperatures.
Why is this suddenly a problem? Basically there seems to have been an influx of 8800's with much bigger coolers, but unfortunately the thermal sensor is also new and only Asus has developed software to utilise it.... for now.
Anyway, my advice to anyone considering buying an 8800GT with a big cooler installed by the manufacturer - buy an Asus.
