It's almost new phone time again, does anyone have anything bad to say about the Pre? I'm considering moving to it from the N95 8gb on an O2 18 month contract.

Quite like the look of the phone and the Linux OS should be a nice change, but I haven't had a chance to actually play with one yet.

Any other decent smart phones that fit the bill of a clean, quick and uncluttered OS? Must haves are decent calender, 802.11n wifi and decent GPS. Also not sure im too keen on not having a physical keyboard.

Currently on Orange, but it seems they have a pretty poor phone selection these days (not an iphone fan either). So I suspect I will either blag an iphone upgrade and sell it to fund an unlocked phone, or cancel and move to o2.

Decisions, Decisions

Thanks

I fancied the Pre and as soon as i played with it i hated it.

One thing that really put me off was there is no software keyboard, so if you where surfing in landscape mode, you'd have to pop out the keyboard and move to portrait mode just to type in it. Pain in the backside tbh.
I would look around tbh, have a play around with some of the Android phones, or even wait and see if nexus one comes over here.

Yep id have to agree with Jumpurs...i played with one when they were released by O2 and honestly its very laggy and the keyboard is absolutely dire tbqh.

As for N WIFI??...at the moment no handset out there has it although the new Google Nexus handset has it from what i have heard but so far thats the only handset out that carries the WIFI N chip.

Ok thanks guys, I suppose I can do without the N wifi :) Will have a look around for something a bit better, seems that a lot of people dislike the Pre's keyboard.

I've been using a Palm Centro for the past year and it's got a very similar keyboard which I find very easy to use (and I'm far far faster on the Palm Centro's keyboard than the virtual keyboard on the iPhone)

I really liked the Pre - indeed it was my first choice of a phone. I was bitterly disappointed when it was O2 only so had to settle for an iPhone 3GS (my second choice) to replace my Palm Centro

Have a play with one in store and see what you think. If you like the fact that the Palm Pre WebOS runs on a Linux kernel have a look at the Nokia N900 too

i have the palm pre, and yes it has on onboard keyboard, but i love the actual KB. its fantastic, took an hour to get used to it form my iphone 3g, BUT actual KB>virtual any day now.

its very fast, esp with the 1.3.5.2 update.

the best thing is palm love homebrew, and you dont need to jailbreak it to get homebrew. the pre is very open, and the patches for it are insane. the homebrew comunnity makes this phone even more amazing than it already it, and the multitasking is suberb! really really goood. the gestures to go back etc etc are very useful and when i go back to any other touch screen i automatically try doing them, and then remmber that they cant, its so intuitive.

Motorola Milestone!

The Pre, the N900, the Milestone and the iPhone 3GS all have the same CPU, but the on on the pre's only clocked at 500MHz.

It's true that on the milestone it's also been downclocked to 550, but some enterprising software writers for android have managed to overclock it to above EIGHT-HUNDRED MHz :D

hehe, the homebrew community also have a patch to oc it to 600mhz. though when yuo can play the exact same 3d games as the iphone (NFSUC for instant) on stock, it dont make much difference lol.
