Panasonic AE1000 projector

See the AV forums.
There have been a small number of discussions on the unit, all of which have been very positive.
There was also a link to a review comparing it against other similar 1080P capable units, including the Sony Pearl (DLP).
Overall, the review put the Panny at the top, though I remember the review suggesting that all were very good.

Note that the other unit worth considering around this price is the new JVC unit, which is slightly more expensive, but also meant to be the dogs nuts.

I'm in the same boat ramdor - having spent the last 6 months or so looking into projectors for my living room.

It's now down to 4 models - JVC HD1, AE1000, AX100 and Epson TW700. I see rainbows so DLP is out of the question.

The JVC is the king of the bunch, but seems to be around twice the price of the 1080p Panasonic, which can be had for under 2k on Amazon. If it was around the same price i'd pick it up in a second. My concern with both models is that they may be a little to dim, especially for games playing, and whether the dynamic iris used with the AE1000 will become too annoying. The lack of a DI, as well as better blacks, contrast and, well, everything, is why I want the JVC.

Then there's the cheaper 720p AX100 (under £900 I think) and the Epson which should both be plenty bright for use in ambient light and good all rounders. The only real advantage (imo) of recent 1080p pjs is the better image quality they offer, not the increase in resolution, which makes little difference. Spending the extra cash just for 1080p is a big fat waste. Either of these would be a stop gap for a couple of years and replaced with a 1-2k 1080p model that will poo on anything available now :)

I know what you mean. I've been running an AE500 for 18 months now and have considered a better unit. Whilst the AE500 does output 720p, I get the impression that there's been a number of fairly signficant improvements in areas like constrast ratio, meaning that the newer units are meant to be a good deal better.

At the moment I'm awaiting initial feedback on the JVC, which is meant to start delivering this coming week.
Like yourself, I suffer from rainbow effect, so a DLP is not an option.

Have you tried any more recent models with faster colour wheels? :)

The last DLP I saw was an £8k Barco unit about 8 months ago.
The rainbow effect was just SOOOOOO distracting. Having said that, no one else commented on it, so I'm guessing that it's dependant upon the person in question and their eyesight.
