Set to be officially released on 4th January and start shipping early Spring. Definitely one for the mDSLR videographers here.

Panasonic Develops the World's First*1
4K 60p/50p Video Recording Digital Single Lens
Mirrorless Camera LUMIX GH5 Featuring '6K PHOTO'*2

Panasonic today announced that it has developed a new Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM) Camera LUMIX GH5 that is capable of recording smooth, high-precision 4K 60p/50p and faithful 4:2:2 10-bit 4K video*3 for the first time in the world*1.

It also features '6K PHOTO'*2 which extracts approx.18-megapixel still images from ultra high-quality video with approx. 9 times the pixel count of Full-HD. The new LUMIX GH5 is scheduled for commercialization and introduction to the global market in early 2017.

Panasonic has been committed to the development of innovative digital cameras under the theme "Create a new photo culture in the digital era." The world's first Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera DMC-G1 was introduced in 2008*4 and the subsequent DMC-GH1 achieved the world's first Full HD video recording in 2009*5.

In 2014, Panasonic introduced the DMC-GH4, which realized 4K 30p/25p video recording for the first time in the industry*6. At the same time, Panasonic proposed a new and unique method of photography 'called 4K PHOTO' which allows users to capture fleeting photographic moments that even the eyes cannot catch in 4K resolution at 30 fps to save as high-quality photos.

As a result, the DMC-GH4 is highly acclaimed for its exceptional performance in both photography and videography by a wide range of professional users worldwide – not only photographers but also cinematographers in the film production field, as well as emerging photo/video-hybrid creators.

By advancing Panasonic technologies, such as digital signal processing and heat dissipation, and packing them into the compact, lightweight body of a Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera, the LUMIX GH5 enables 4K 60p/50p and 4:2:2 10-bit 4K video recording*3, which has never before been achieved *1. With this unprecedented video recording performance, Panasonic aims to further capitalize on the strength that it has achieved in the film production industry.

In the LUMIX GH5, the conventional '4K PHOTO' function is dramatically advanced to form '6K PHOTO'*2 which lets the user cut a still image out of ultra high-quality 18-megapixel video with approx. 9 times the pixel count than Full-HD. Taking advantage of its high-speed, long-time burst shooting capability, spur-of-the-moment shots can be saved in beautiful photos with higher resolution that complies with larger-sized printing by substantially increasing the resolution from approx.8-megapixel (4K PHOTO) to approx.18-megapixel (6K PHOTO*2) Furthermore, approx.8-megapixel 4K PHOTO can be captured at 60 fps.

The LUMIX GH5 goes on show at Photokina 2016, which will be held at Koelnmesse, Germany, through 20-25 September in 2016, together with the new LEICA DG VARIO-ELMARIT F2.8-4.0 Lens Series. Achieving both high optical performance and a compact size, the LEICA DG VARIO-ELMARIT F2.8-4.0 Lens Series includes a new 12-60mm standard zoom lens, 8-18mm wide zoom lens and 50-200mm telephoto zoom lens that will be showcased as a reference exhibit at the Panasonic booth.

Personally I'm a Sony shooter, I love their technology, but I'm sick and tired of them crippling it with crappy software, then releasing a new model rather than fixing flaws via firmware updates. Not sure I could live with m43 if it wasn't for video.
 
The GH5 specs not mentioned by Digicameinfo are:

1. Slow motion up to 180 fps!
2. much larger number of focus point: 225 vs 49 in the GH4.
3. Same body weather sealing as the E M1 II – up to minus 10 degrees of cold.
4. 5 axis IBIS
5. The 20MP sensor is actually NEW
6. No more limit about the duration of recording. 29 minutes in Europe.
7.The audio XLR microphone hotshoe mounted I/O interface will be compatible with the DMC-GH4.
8.It has full size HDMi
9. Panasonic plans to start shipping out the GH5 in March/April!
10. Body only: Price will be between 1 800 € and 2 000 € in Europe for the DMC-GH5.
11. Price will be ± 2 900 € for the DMC-GH5 + the new Panasonic Leica 12-60 Lens (not the older 12-60mm lens!)
 
Same priced as a used A7r II or used A7S II. Will likely have a much better 4k bitrate than both of them though. 10bit 4:2:2 4k must be well over 200Mbps maybe even up to 400Mbps. I guess we'll know more tomorrow.
 
Yeah. I can sort of see why the small sensor em1 mark ii can justify its price due to its speed.

The GH5 will have to offer the best video to justify its similar price. Although nice to see weatherproofing and IBIS on it.

Two pre-announced firmware updates

It's worth noting that Panasonic already has two firmware updates planned for the camera, one expected around April, which will bring 10-bit 4:2:2 1080p capture, and a second at some point during the summer.

The summer firmware update promises some very big improvements, including DCI/UHD 4K 4:2:2 10-bit recording at 400Mbps, and 1080/60p 4:2:2 10-bit recording at 200Mbps, both using All-Intra compression. Support for anamorphic 4K capture will also be added at that point.

Other than the size, it's looking good.

$2,000 over at B&H. If it's £2,000 when it hits the UK, it'd be cheaper to fly to the States, buy one, and fly back and still save.

Sony will be announcing the A7 III this quarter. Different kettle of fish, but I imagine they will add 4k, improve the IBIS, and possibly up the bitrate, whilst still being cheaper than the A7S II and A7R II.

Interesting times.

The GH5 is slated to go on sale on the 20th March, costing £1699 body only, £1899 in an ‘M’ kit with the Panaso0nic 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS lens, or £2199 in an ‘L’ kit with the new Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4 OIS lens. Panasonic says it will supplement, rather than replace, the current GH4 in its range.

Amazing it's cheapest in the uk. £1699 most places and £1650 in one place. That's a great exchange rate from $1999 when you add the vat in as well. No rip off Britain.

Well it's worse than the official exchange rate, which has fallen recently too. Still at least it includes all taxes. Often things are priced 1:1 with the US.

5 year warranty, and cashback on a trade-in too at Park.

Now the Sony A7rII is £2899 at Park but you can pick them up new with no additional taxes to pay for £2200. A similar percentage deal on the GH5 and it would be a cheap.

Confused? Reason it's normally 1:1 is exactly cause of vat. $2000 at 1.2 exchange plus vat puts you back at £2000. This is priced £300 cheaper than the states list price. Even ignoring vat

The em1 mark Ii has same dollar list price but is £200 dearer in the uk

It's not a bad price at all considering it has the 'camcorder' tax on it too.

Uk price is £1,699 INC VAT so its actually £1,415.83 without the tax. And at least one outlet has it at £1650 as well already for pre orders.

So its £209.10 plus VAT cheaper than the US list price. Okay not £300 but I wasnt sure what the exchange rate was and had assumed it was still $1.2 to the pound.

As I have said, for once the UK list price is cheaper than the US one. Normally it would be £1,624.94 plus VAT = £1,949.93.

So in that respect at UK price the camera is a steal. Dont forget people from the states can order from the Uk and only pay £1415 which is $1741. The US for a change is getting robbed at $1999.

Through in the fact that in the UK £100 of that £1699 price is the camcorder tax and its even more remarkable.

I suspect Olympus will drop the UK price of the em1 Mrk ii in the next few weeks to match the Panasonic.

There is a site calling itself Panasonic Direct allegedly selling for £1675.

Still can't find it for £1650. Seems to be one of those cryptic things people on these boards post and then get scared off by naming a company that isn't a competitor. It's been mentioned in another thread too.

nice camera everything you would want from a m43 camera but the weight 715grams ,
got some things better than my omd em1 mk2 evf,rear screen dual is both uhs2 and of course better video specs ,dual is 2 compatible with a larger range of lenses than dual sync of olympus ,if the 4k af is useable it will be a winner it was pretty poor on the gh4 although not a lot better on the omd em1 mk2.

Sorry had a look and can't find it anymore. I remember seeing the link come up on launch date and it said an extra forty odd quid off.

Might had been just a one off for first day. Sorry.
 
there out on the 20th, I got a trade in quote for my gh4 they offered me £400 cost me £1600 new, 60fps in 4k is the big thing for me for smooth footage and slo-mo allways lacking on the gh4.
