Picked up my new Panasonic TH-42PX80 last night and got it plumbed into my Sky and DVD player.
Initially out of the box the SD picture was very good. After some minor tweaking it got better and IMHO is far better than my old 28" CRT TV that it replaced. Colours are really vivid but not OTT and motion is smooth with no sign of any nasty trails or ghosting, as you would expect from a Plasma.
Ended up watching Ghostbusters on DVD via Scart connection. My HDMI player has died so I had to use a 10 year old player that was in the loft. Picture Quality was better than I expected. Blacks were almost as black as the top/bottom boarder and better than I thought they would be. Saying the film is 20 odd years old and I'm using a 99p scart lead from a 10 year old dvd player I was blown away by the overall performance.
Watched some Sky SD and found the following. On main stream channels the picture was easily as good as a decent CRT TV but on lower bitrate channels there was some pixelation but not enough to spoil the picture. Colours were lovely and rich and whites were bright and not dull as some LCD lovers say. Stuck some footy on and was pleased to see the ball at all time moving around the screen with no blur etc. Fast motion was great and very clear.
Setting up the screen was very easy so anyone who's not sure shouldn't be worried. The instructions are very good not that you will need them.
I stuck on some Stargate Atlantis avi (350MB file) and although the quality was low compared to digital the screen coped very well. No detail was lost and there was no pixelation etc. Sound was great too.
Going to get a long HDMI cable tomorrow then hook up my HTPC so I can try som HD material.
I picked mine up for £599 with a 5 year Panasonic Warranty. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a good all round Plasma TV
