PANASONIC VIERA TXL47E5B 47" LED

Vs.

LG 50PM670T - 50" Plasma

I had talked myself into a Plasma but then saw the Panasonic.

My needs are: (In order of preference).

Games from the PC
Films
Day to day television (young family).

Any help appreciated, thanks.

Is the Panasonic really that much better, even with the benefits of Plasma regarding motion etc?

It is the motion issue which is really putting me off an LCD set.

I have the L47E5B from Co-op and got it last friday.

WOW. I'm blown away soso pleased i bought the TV.

Have alook in the thread I made about this TV and on Hot UK as there are lots of setting suggestions and other user feedback.

you wont go wrong.

Panasonic plasma? :)

Not for £550 unfortunately :(

My gaming monitor is LCD, play OK on that.

What is the difference between a "television" and a "Monitor" using the same tech yet perform so different?

Gaming is not the primary use but it would bug me if it was below par to my monitor.

Mainly the processing that goes into altering and adjusting the picture.

Most TV's have a 'Game' mode which basically turns it all off like a monitir.

This, taken from the HDTV review, was one of the key pieces of information that sealed the purchase for me:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The TXL42E5 yielded excellent results following basic calibration in [True Cinema] mode. The mass shades of warm colours that envelop Charlize Theron’s face, neck and chest were clearly visible, very close to a calibrated display. "

"IPS panels have the best grayscale tracking of all current flat-panel televisions (with the possible exception of OLED TV). So as predicted, the performance of the 42E5 was excellent and comparable to the calibrated Dell 2209WA. There was no visible evidence of any serious black crush or any form of gamma error.

Real-World Content

The majority of HD content were beautifully rendered by the TX-L42E5B thanks to the new and improved 10-bit processor, which amended the issues we’ve noted on its predecessors.

We failed to spot any form of error that would normally destroy or severely impact picture quality, which remained clean and faithful to the source. Thanks the wide viewing angle of IPS Mode, the image quality appeared very natural and realistic. There was no hint of translucent blacks that is common to VA panels with excessive gamma shift.

Speaking of blacks, the Panasonic TX-L42E5 did a fantastic job retaining an acceptable level of shadow detail in a dimly-lit environment. However, F1 did highlight the out-of-sync backlight issue – fast moving segments were accompanied by 2-3 after-images, which proved rather distracting.

Playback of 24p material was faithful to its source as expected from Panasonic. In fact, the motion is comparable to digital cinemas."

I watched, via the SKY HD F1 channel, some footage yesterday and could see no such trailing images. While I didnt watch a full race I dont really watch F1 or football (no i'm not gay - LOL) so this doesn't bother me even if it did.

Gaming via the Wii & my HTPC has been perfect, I am SO SO pleased with this TV

We mainly play Mario kart, cars 2 racing and super Mario bros on the Wii and it is amazing! No ghosting or lag. I also have a need for speed that's great and on the htpc dayz and counterstrike are fine.

I was considering the E5B LED models but the problems with motion blur and backlight scanning sync put me off. Accidentally found that John lewis have the 50" panasonic UT50 series plasma at £599. It's only real flaw is the unfiltered screen which needs dark conditions to perform at it's best. (Otherwise it is identical to the more expensive ST50 series) Mine should be here on wednesday.

When you say problems? Have you experienced these??

One review mentioned it not being as good as a plasma. Everyone in the hot uk deals link said they cannot see any ghosting.

I personally have played FPS games as well as half dozen Wii games and not had any problems.

Maybe we all just got lucky with ours?

I got the TXL47E5B from John Lewis a few months ago and it went back due to bad DSE and Banding. The picture was good though and for the money now I would get one. (£550 from Richer Sounds or John Lewis with 5 years warranty as co op sold out)

However, I eventually ended up with the TXL55ET5B which also had some DSE and Banding. I kept it and after 200 ish hours it (all the DSE and banding) had gone away.

Makes me wonder if these sets just need running in and a lot of the problems experienced when the TVs are turned on and subsequently returned after only a few hours will disappear after time. This would explain why shop display models often appear flawless.

In the interim I also tried Plasma (samsung) but could not get on with the buzzing on white. When actually it buzzed all the time, quieter not on white, and at a frequency which drove me nuts. A lot of the cheaper plasmas buzz (i tested LG and Samsung in several stores). You can hear it faintly in stores if you shove your ears to them. At home with no ambient noise they may drive you insane.

Panasonic plasma seem to fair better on the buzzing front.

I never fully tested one so couldn't say whether it would be noticeable or not. Didn't really want to take a chance on it. I looked at the E5B side by side with an ST50 plasma (as they didn't have a UT50) and the plasma was substantially better. The colours were not as accurate, the whites were clipped and blacks weren't as good on the LCD. Motion also seemed smoother on the plasma too, but this was just ordinary HD video content rather than anything fast paced.

I guess it depends on how it was configured in store. One guy on the co op hot UK deals post said the picture es just ok. He then changed the settings to what I told him and said the.difference was amazing.

A more expensive plasma will always be better :-)
