Panicing about strange temp readings!

Southampton, hopefully not too hot, or too cold
After receiving my new G.Skill memory, I retested for a stable overclock using the 1:1 divider, which turned out to be 265HTT. This gave me idle temps of 31C and gaming temps of 42C, which rapidly dropped down according to Speedfan.

Yesterday morning, I briefly tried running 270HTT and a 1:1 divider, but this was aborted after Trackmania Nations crashed. I then went back to the tried and tested 265HTT (2400MHz).

Around lunchtime yesterday, I flashed my Asrock Dual-SATA2 to the new official 1.60 bios, using the 'flash in Windows' download (used that for the 1.40 and 1.50 versions without problems).

Since yesterday afternoon, the CPU and mobo (Northbridge?) temps are very odd. Regardless of leaving my PC idle or under load, the CPU temp always shows the same values now! This reading varies from 40C to 48C, depending on what the HTT is set to between 200 and 265. At present (at 250), the CPU reads as 44C and the mobo as 38C.

I have tried re-applying paste using both the stock HSF and my Freezer 64 Pro, but it didn't make the slightest difference. I have been using approximately 1.5 rice grains worth of paste... does this sounds ok?

The northbridge feels very hot to the touch and I'm wondering if I ought to check the paste under it (read about some poor paste levels by Asrock on both northbridge and southbridge).

In the last 36 hours, while using IE6 in Windows2000, I have experienced split-second loss of picture to my Iiyama Vision Master Pro 451.

Should I be considering RMAing the mobo and/or the cpu?

Advice would be greatly appreciated :)

No joy...

I've tried reverting to the 1.50 bios, loading optimal defaults and then rebooting, yet even with stock speeds and Cool'n'Quiet running I get 39C :(

The split-second loss of picture are becoming more frequent now, even had the pc reboot on me while running the Trackmania Nations benchmark a few times. The 7800GT has not been at anything but stock since arrival, running the Forceware 83.40 drivers.

Have you tried uninstalling then reinstalling the temp monitoring software?
My MSI Neo4-F is behaving strangley also ...
The Core Centre keeps setting me back to 267HTT and 1.3v even though the BIOS is set to 290HTT and 1.4v. Also with Core Centre, PC switches off at 50C yet the alarm isn't set until 60C. It's a controlled shutdown with no errros on restarting XP.... I have reverted to AIDA32 for now

Currently priming at 2.6Ghz (can belive how well IE runs even though I have 2 sessions of prime running the max heat torture test), Opteron 165 , 2GB Gskill 4000 on 333 divider @ 240Mhz Temp 52C on the stock cooler

On an optimistic note...

My new rig is about 1m away from the main radiator in the lounge and it feels warmer in here than usual. Perhaps the room temperature rise is in the region of 4C, which would presumeably give 4C higher idle temps (its now idling at 35C at stock levels with newly applied paste and the Freezer 64 Pro).

Does this theory sound feasibly?
