Did a search but could not find any previous threads on this.

The creator of EverQuest, Brad McQuaid, has launched a Kickstarter for creating a more difficult MMO that goes back to the days of EverQuest but with modern games in mind but without the conveniences of today's MMO's.

To me it looks really promising but would need more backers to hit the $800k target in the 30 days that are left.

Hopefully there are some people here who are willing to pledge and help make this happen. I've pledged as much as I can myself as I really believe this could be a new beginning for MMO's.

For some of you who have not played EverQuest and games like it, it was an MMO where you had to be social and interact with other players unlike today's MMO's.

Adventuring as a group was one of the most important aspects of the game if you wanted to survive. Soloing was possible if you knew your class well but grouping was always the best option.

Just stumbled on this and pledged. Mixed feelings really, loved EQ but it did take a toll on my life and I've no desire to go back to that lifestyle. Hopefully casual gamers will be able to do stuff as well.

Looking back, the main problem with EQ was trying to find a group, it basically encouraged all players down the EC/OOM/LOIO/OT/DL/KC cycle if you wanted to level, and of course you did. I hear what Brad is saying about travel not being ultra-convenient like it is in WoW, but at the same time I don't really want to spend an hour getting to a target location then finding there's no-one there and I can't do anything.

Brad has said that the game is designed to be played in shorter sessions. Dungeons will have safe spots where you can log off for example.

In EQ we could often stay at camps for 6, 10 hours or even more at a time as it was such a hassle to get there that you did not want to leave. Same with raids, our Sunday raid schedule for example was 12pm to 7pm.

I think he's realised that those kind of things are not realistic for his audience anymore with jobs, kids and so on.

From what I've read the travel system will be quick travel points once you've discovered them but not many of them. It sounds like a good compromise to me. I guess it might be a bit like Planes of Power portals in EQ where you can port to certain locations but you will still have to run some distance.
