hey guys

Recently had fibre installed at home and my pc is using a old netgear wg111v2 usb wifi adapter. Using speedtest.net i get a pretty constant 13mb download and 9mb upload.

When i do the same test on my phone next to the computer i get 18/19mb download and the same upload. I take it the netgear usb isnt up to the job?

I've tried running a ethernet lead from the router to my pc which gives me 29-34mb download but i have to run a cable around the living room.

Is there any other usb adapter for around £20 that'll improve my speed closer to the ethernet speed?

cheers :)

Can you not hide the cable below carpet, or along the top of the skirting board. I also had a netgear adapter, (WPN111) from netgear, absolutely useless. It would overheat and loose connection, often causing the pc to freeze. Ended up buying a long ethernet cable and havent looked back since.

Yea i could just run a cable, it wouldnt be impossible or even that much of a pain. Just used to have everything wireless lol :)

I take it no wifi adapter will come close to ethernet speeds?

Wired all the way tbh. Much more stable. Your paying for good speeds so you might as well get the most from it.:)

I'd say if you really want to remain wireless an internal PCI-E N rated card woud be better than a USB adaptor. I've got a G rated abit PCI-E wifi card in this PC and it's been rock solid.

powerline adaptors are another alternative if you dont want to run cables all the way round the house

Would go for that unless you move lots of data in the network. For simple tasks, streaming music videos much better than wireless, more secure, no radiation and more secure.
