Anyone absolutely intrigued by this? I'm doing it within a module at the moment. Seems absolutely fascinating how much progress has been made, yet at the same time, the reliance on "paper" and what not has not diminished.

Anyone got any informed opinions they wish to add?

Is paperless education just referring to courses which purely use computing equipment?

I personally hate learning on computers. I always write stuff out by hand before typing it up. I just cannot think as well while typing on a computer. In fact I have a written draft copy of by 20k dissertation I did earlier this year.

When it comes to reading academic papers, I much prefer print out copies and thats the same for books. I know its wasteful, but I'm more productive this way.

No, but I have an uninformed one. Teaching children purely on computers is short-sighted and ludicrous. We are creating a society that will panic when faced with menial tasks but no PCs to do them on.

Depend what for. If a paper based booklet is offered I tend to take it, and occasionally I'll print out some PowerPoint slides to annotate. I tend to learn better when writing out notes so I'll never be able to be fully paperless myself.
I will be using my iPad (enter your mobile device of choice here) when I'm back in uni next year, will be easier than carting the laptop around and is a better reading experience. I look forward to seeing how well I can work digitally. :)

I think the trouble is with computers, it's far easier for people these days to get distracted by something. It's easier to turn a phone of and sit at a desk.

Paper wont be replaced in the near future. (imo)

Even in this day and age, if I need to remember something I'll write it down on paper... even with newfangled technology I still use pen and paper...

Nothing to do with education, but I'd rather use paper tbh.

I have an informed opinion.

And that is not everyone on the interweb is a student. And thus your assumption that everyone here knows what you are talking about is frankly insulting. :)

It's an interesting concept. Who knows, it might turn out like Star Trek in the not so distant future where everyone uses Handheld pads to write stuff (or type rather). I can't see paper based stuff being replaced anytime soon though.
