In this deep character driven strategy game, you play as the head of an illustrious Samurai family. The year is 1467 and civil war has broken out. The authority of the Ashikaga Shoguns has collapsed and it is every man for himself in the provinces. Honor and duty vie with survival in the delicate dance of power, conquest and betrayal as you attempt to unite the land of the Rising Sun through a combination of deal-making with foreign powers, sending your powerful samurai armies into battle against your enemies, and unleashing shadowy Ninja clans under the cover of darkness to assassinate your rivals! FEATURES:

  • Control a noble family in Feudal Japan
  • Rise in influence and power within your clan and go on to claim the ultimate prize
  • Conquer and grow while rewarding your most valued retainers in your bid to become Shogun
  • Detailed historical map of Japan during the warring states period
  • Make deals with external powers, including the Portuguese and the Dutch
  • Employ the aid of powerful Ninja clans when your Samurai armies are not enough

Shogun 2 rip-off much?

Absolutely not. The two games aren't even close.

I just got my copy today. Spent the first half an hour of my first game paused, just looking around the interface and incredible wealth of options and setting myself up.

I've started as a kind of middle-ranked guy in a medium-sized clan, hopefully so as not to give myself too little or too much to do to begin with. It's really atmospheric and pretty good-looking, and even seems bug-free so far, although I haven't even scratched the surface of the mechanics yet.

Has anyone else bought this? After an hour's play I've realised that I really need to read the manual before I go any further.

Is it more like shougun 2(without the combat) or a Civ 4?

I guess you could call it Shogun 2 without the combat, although that would be really simplifying things. It's a very complex and deep game. If you've played other Paradox titles like Crusader Kings or Europa Universalis you'll know what to expect.

Warfare is definitely a part of Sengoku, but going to war is often your plan B, if your masterplan fails, and units are limited to only three types. This game is about politics and intrigue (and ninjas!). You have to do a lot of political manouevering to position yourself as the leader of your clan, then ultimately Shogun of all Japan, and you do this through diplomacy, tactical marriages, backstabbing, assassinations etc. You can just stomp all over an opponent's lands but that will cost you honour and may leave you open to some backstabbing by your vassals.

I'll post more impressions after tonight's session if anyone's interested. Gonna spend the day reading the manual though!

To be fair that does pretty much sound like Shogun's campaign map, and none of the battling. I played a game as Tokugawa as diplomatically as possible, hardly any fighting in that :D
