So I've got the Parallells trail installed before I take the plunge, though I have some performance related questions.

During installation I chose to "run apps as a mac" and then proceeded to install Windows 7. Paralells made a shortcut on my desktop to windows 7 an it acted as I would have expected - an instance of the virtual machine will "start up"

I then proceeded to install "Parallell tools", which has gone and enabled the "run windows apps like a mac". If I'm not explaining myself well, here's a screenshot of my mac's top bar

This is pretty cool stuff - as I can launch windows apps straight off there. My only concern is, that the VM is always running, meaning it will be eating into my Mac's resources all the time.

Is that the case, or am I missing something?

Nope, it will be running the whole time. The coherence mode is simply a way of integrating the OS into OSX as seamlessly as possible. You will see that when you start it up, it goes through all the usual stages of booting windows then finally removes the window in favour of the coherence mode.

Thanks mate, I was kinda under the impression that Paralllels was not running (couldn't see it's icon as I was cmd+tabbing) and it did some weird magic to my Mac :p

I see now that you need to quit it in the Parallels menu itself - doh, silly me!

thanks for the quick response.
