I'm suprised that I've not seen any mention of Paraworld on these forums, It's fairly original for a RTS, has good graphics, an involving storyline and a decent amount of SP gameplay. There seems to be a fairly large MP community although I've not played it online yet so can't comment on how it does play.
It has a good heratage as it's by Sunflowers who make the Anno games (1503/1602/1701), and there's a demo out, give it a go.
