Parcel to the USA, no Customs declaration form

Made a bit of a booboo today. I'm sending a parcel to the US for a friend who was involved in a motorcycle accident a few weeks ago (broken pelvis, arm in two places and muscle damage in his leg) and I used Parcelmonkey who in turn used DPD.

I got my email from parcelmonkey with the DPD form, printed this and attached it securely to my parcel. I dropped it off to get collected from my local Halfords.

Now I realise my error. Parcel monkey never sent me anything telling me I had to complete a US Customs declaration and I see that on the parcel monkey website it's telling me I still have to fill one in. Oops.

I believe the parcel was collected earlier today and I've likely no chance of getting it back so what's likely to happen? Will Customs open it and my friend gets a bill? Will it be returned to me after Customs have rifled through it? Returned unopened? Delivered without issue?

Without correct paperwork, courier should return it to you prior to despatch, or at least notify you of your short coming and give you a chance to rectify.
