Parent's Build Suggestions

Ok, I am not actually planning to build new parents, but need to update their PC! lol

Their current pc is a system I built a fair few years ago with an athlon 2500 (I think) in it. It's something of that ilk, anyway, with 512mb of ram. How times have changed!

The budget is £500 tops, obviously less is better and for that I need windows 7, power supply, motherboard, ram, cpu & heatsink/cooler. I have hdds I can use and their case, although old, should be fine, it's an old chieftech dragon midi tower or something. They like it anyway. And their monitor is fine.

The only things I am really looking for is onboard graphics, as they don't play games or do anything that would stress even integrated graphics and the lower the power draw, the better. Future upgrade capability not really essential as I would imagine most components will be out of date by the time they need to upgrade again, as evidenced by the current system. And no I won't be overclocking it! Hehe

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Have a look at this, Ive included new HDD cos a) you can afford it b) if theyre that old theyll bottleneck new system, may as well start fresh

Edit: You prob are ok using old case but make sure you give it a good clean out, or you can get a decent enough case for 30 quid anyway

dont know about that case so cant recomend a cooler though depending on airflow and you not overclocking the stock should be fine.

H55 intel boards have onboard graphics. If you are not overclocking, you could almost certainly just use the stock heat sink, thus saving some cash. An AMD system may be cheaper, but I don't have much experience with their hardware.

The hdds should be fine (I hope lol), they're from my last system, they are samsung spinpoint F1's, I think. Certainly nothing too old, anyway.

I will clean the case out when I do it, but they like the case as it's purple. Hey don't ask me, each to their own! It has a few 80mm fans in with a fan controller, so it's not too bad. Was a good case at the time, as I remember.

Oh and forgot, sorry, don't need optical drives either.

Thanks for the spec, will take a look. Cheers.

Could always strip that build out and put it in their old case.

It looks like it'll do everything they need it to. You'll also look better if you save them £150, or wow them with an SSD.

Are you trying to suggest I don't already look good to my parents?? lol

Hmmm, I could strip it out, I guess.

No, you'll look better. :p

And it'd save £140 - which could be used on a boot SSD.

+1

Your parents most likely would not be able to tell the difference between an i3 and a 3ghz wolfdale (e6500).

However, they would definately be able to notice the difference an SSD makes. They are well worth the money.
I think that your parents would prefer the cash to the smoother system & faster load times though - I know mine would.
