My financial circumstances are a bit poo at the mo so need to get in control and that involves ditching my peccie car and getting a diesel.

Some background, the current car is a Nissan X-trail 2.5 SVE Automatic 04 plate but it's an import. Now I saved nearly 5k off list price getting it from Cyprus or some such place and understand I will pay a penalty on resale.

Parkers says this
Original Price £21,877
Franchised Dealer £13,370
Independent Dealer £12,820
Private Good £12,155
Private Poor £9,835
Part Exchange £11,160

It is in very good nick except a little corrosion on the alloys. I am going with an assumption that I should get 10k, what do you chaps think?

Next is the question of what to get. I'm hovering between the best 320d estate I can get or saving a little cash and getting a Mondeo estate.

The mondeo would be newer and bigger (which I need) but the wife wouldn't be pleased!

So the big question is, will a garage part ex an Euro-import 4x4 for a 320d estate with no cash changing hands?

Will a garage pay me money to swap my car for a Mondeo? It seems like the sort of thing they wouldn't do but thought I'd ask as some of you are in the trade.

Have you sat down and actually calculated how much of a "saving" doing this will make.

How many miles do you do per year?

About 16,000 give or take.

Petrol costs me 45 per week and I get 23 mpg at the moment. If I can get 40+mpg I will save between £50 and £100 a month, hopefully with no net cost during the "car swap"

Added to that, if I get a Mondeo, I'll be back in warranty which I value for peace of mind and servicing is cheaper than the Nissan which has a barmy 9k service interval.

Surely someone must have some advice?

Basically, can you realistically part-ex a car that means no money changes hands or the dealer ends up paying you a small amount?

i remember many moons ago a friend of my mothers swapped a year or two old 3 series bmw for a brand spanking new pug 406 + £500 cash.

I had a 53 (2003) CR-V (2.0l Sport Auto) which was costing me an arm and a leg to run (its quite thirsty and high road tax group)... which was coming to the end of its finance (3 year thinngy)...

Anyhew, I managed to pay it off (allong with a few other bills) but it was still costing me a bundle each month!.

It was worth about £10,000 if I sold it private, which I tried with no luck, so I went to the Honda garage where I bought it, and after falling in love with a nice little (02 - 2002) Very Low millage, Civic 1.4 'Vision' for £6000, I asked about Downgrading, They said the CR-V was worth £9000 p/x (it had 88,000miles in 2.5 years).

So the next week I drove off the forecourt with a new car, cheaper Insurance, Cheaper Tax (they gave me 6 months!), nearly a third the Fuel consumption (they gave me a full tank!), and £3000 in m pocket!...

Perfect, just got the fact dealers think I'm lower than the poop on their shoes for buying an import!

Shouldn't rip us off then dammit.
