I think I already know the answer to this but...

Looking for something a little more practical from my current Megane R26- mainly something 5 door with more boot space.

I'm fairly interested in the Octavia MKII VRS, having seen a few reasonable priced examples around. Parker's price p/x for the Megane is £5330, with the dealer price being £6650. I've seen what seems a decent Octavia VRS for £6000.

What do you think most garages would say, regarding a part exchange? I don't really want to put much money into the swap.

The other option is of course to sell privately- I'd be happy with 6K for the Megane.

Private will be your best bet but you could be waiting a while.

Part-ex can be surprising but mostly miserable. Varies massively between all the garages. Ring around your local garages and give them a description of your car and they will give you a rough estimate. Then go see them if you liked their estimate.

I suspect they will give you bottom book for yours and charge top whack for the Octavia, otherwise what is the point in the deal for them?

I thought this as well, and the only thing I could think of is (in some cases) the p/x'd car could be more desirable.

However, in my situation I doubt that's the case. The VRS is a solid / popular car.

Scour the vRS owners club/forums for a well looked after one and somebody who wants to trade for something more hardcore (if they are indeed of similar value).

Parker's is very unreliable tbh, the likes of cap will give you a better idea of actual trade value.

All depends on what you're willing to accept really. The fact you are buying a car at retail price and giving them one at trade means they have potentially got some money to make on the new car so it could work.

We done it recently, bought a car worth less than the trade in, got a decent price (better than I had been offered privately) for the trade in and the dealers car was priced about right...for being from a dealer.
