Not for me.

18 year old, needs a part time/weekend job.

When I was that age I just asked in a few places and got a job really easily in Waitrose. Whats the best way these days?

Any good job sites, just go ask around?

Local papers, job centre?

What used to work well (in .au) was writing a classified txt advert in the local paper - that used to get a lot of job offers.

Ways I found my student jobs:
- in the window of the post office (bar job)
- via a local recruitment agency who hired seasonal/temp staff (retail job, call centre job)
- by applying directly (supermarket job)

Just tell him to walk into his local McD's, they are always taking on. Valuable life experience too, he'll hate the public in a week if he doesn't already.

indeed is generally the go to place for jobs these days

Yea I spent about half an hour looking through earlier, surprisingly fewer part time weekend around jobs than you might think, at least being advertised.

None of the big supermarkets around here had anything for example and I looked directly on their own sites.

I found about 5 potentials, retail/bar staff.

I've asked him to email some local recruitment agents as well.

Does he have any skills per se? I was emailing local small businesses rather than applying for actual positions

(Skills - like computers for e.g.).

He's doing engineering in college.

He is quite practical for his age, he's done some bar/waitering at a local golf course, but it was addhoc shifts and not had any work since November now.

It has to be weekend though as he's in college during the week, plus I want him out of the house.

I would think of all the major stores near you and trawl the websites to see if they've got vacancies nearby.

Then head out with paper CVs for the places that don't seem to have those jobs on their websites, probably the smaller places. Saves wasting your time physically trying to hand over CVs in places that are 100% digital.

I doubt his college is full time Mon-Fri? I did about 30 hours from age 16/17 across Mon-Fri and then all day Sat/Sun. That opens up graveyard shift at Currys/Argos/ASDA etc where the old folk are too burdened with family etc

Yea it is, he goes to a technical college, plus it's about 15 miles away so he's gone at 8am and not back till 5:30pm.

I guess he could work in the evening, to be honest I'm not that bothered during the week, it's just he doesn't leave the house at the weekend unless it's with us, it's not healthy at his age. My idea is, by getting some work in the weekend, particularly like bar work, supermarket kinda places, there will be other people his own age, start making friends etc, plus earn some money and get some work experience as a bonus.

try local bars/restaurants etc.

My son started at a local busy bar/restaurant place at 16 - been the best thing for him..... Social skills improved massive, has his own money now, works after school in the evenings on a Friday and then usually longer hours on a sat or Sunday....

Just walk in some local places and ask if there are any jobs. He's still at school (17) but loving his work now - got a works night out next week (their Xmas night out is always Jan as it's too busy in December).

Looks good on University applications / CV etc in the future.

Yea 100% for all those reasons.

I got my first part-time job at 17 in a corporate company doing 1st line IT support, we had to do an exam and had a technical interview. The job was easier than the interview, lol.

If they are tech savvy, you could even try Fivver or Upwork. But I'd go down the local town / city route first as it will be quicker to get a job.
