Part worn tyres = false economy

Used to think it was a good and sort of a "green" thing to buy tyres that were almost as new but not new. The thing that made me change my mind was the uncertainty about the history of these tyres. What is your opinion?

It is interesting as there as such a vast number of them out there seemingly and in a big range of sizes so not just off old scrapped cars, i guess write offs must make up a bit number of them?

part worns can be ok if they are a decent brand and in good condition.
cheap tyres are a no no though, i found that out when i moved to a rear wheel drive car.

But then why would you only sell your tyres and not sell a (far more desirable) wheel and tyre combo?

Because not all people need another four wheels?

And how do you check the condition? Just by looking at it ;)

we had a window cleaner who stopped coming for quite a while - When he did turn up I asked him where he had been - Had accident on Motorway - tyre blew out - then got to blow in bag and lost my license -( His mate was driving when he came to me) I asked if tyre was old- no it was a part worn one - Then asked where he got it from -- Jacko's used tyres !!!!!!! - I looked at him :eek:

I have never had part worn or used in my life - Only ever bought one lot of rubbish tyres and that was on my second car in early 70's -New Gislaved from Sweden or somewhere - they easy did 100k miles but when I turned to go round an island in damp the wheels turned but car went straight on. - I see they still make tyres

Any tyre that has done 100k miles is surely bald

It really depends. In the past when I've scrapped the odd car in general they've had tyres that where good for at least another few thousand miles, so can't see the harm in reusing them?

It really depends, if you know the owner of said tyres and they are being removed due to wheel change, warranty reason then it is OK.

If buying without knowing history just at least make sure they are:
- Never punctured repair
- Less than 6yr old, ideally aim for sub 3yr
- More than 4mm across entire tyre width
- Vastly cheaper than new, half price won't cut it, I mean like vast savings.

I got some MPSS to tie me over a month or two until PS4 S is available, I got 4x MPSS for under £100, no puncture repair, 2014 tyre, fronts are 5mm and 6mm, rears are 4mm and 5mm. Got the full set for £75! The fronts were removed due to lacking Porsche approval for warranty, the rears were removed as owner changes tyres at 4mm. Just avoid puncture repairs, my reasoning is you have no idea how far they drove the car on an under-inflated tyre which considerably weakens the tyre wall and as such it could egg/blow out.

My other options was spend £1000 for the same new tyres when a replacement is due around March, £75 was worth it and having had them inspected garage confirmed they were fine, not gone hard or heat cycled too many times etc.

Or made of very hard rubber.

back in the 70's and 80's tyres were relatively expensive and mileage life was a major marketing issue.

Hard rubber lasts longer but provides less traction.

Like most things in life. There is a trade off.

Not if it's Swedish :p

Done some simple calculations for a new tyre that costs £120

New tyre
You would usually have 6mm of tread to use before you have to replace it.
£20/mm

Part worn tyre 5mm (so you are left with essentially 2mm tread before replacing)
So £40 should be the highest you should be paying for that sort of tyre

When I used to get part worns for trackdays I used a reputable supplier (hard to find...). As I understand it they mostly come from Germany where you have to change both tyres on an axle if you need to change one?

But I still insisted on inspecting them before they were put on the wheels. Had maybe 10 sets an only ever had to reject two.

I guess a lot will be odd tyres where someone changed a pair because one is badly worn or damaged. Then match it with another used one of similar wear.

My 2p.

If you work out how much the tyre is brand new with 8mm of tread, and then work back how much less they are charging for part worn I've often found they are the same price per mm. Obviously it varies as to who is selling.

Therefore, a false economy (unless you are flogging the car perhaps).

Having said that, I know a lot of the tyres come from Germany and places where it's law to fit winter tyres, and people just swap (no idea why they don't keep hold and swap back mind). You can buy a container load of them for just about £10 a tyre and that's what these guys do and mark them up massively. Probably make more money than new retailers by some margin.

This I can say this, margin on new tyres if your competitive with the big sites is pretty slim, sometimes it is in single digits. Whereas the margin on used tyres is huge in comparison.
