Part-worn tyres

Hi guys,

I changed my brake pads on Saturday and noticed that my drivers side front wheel has a slight bulge in the tyre wall. My front passenger tyre is almost bald and my spare is in the same condition.

I've got to drive down to West Wales next month to pick up some 15" Rover Turbo wheels with Eagle F1's on and don't trust my current tyres to get me there.

The Eagle's are almost brand new and so I don't want to spend a fortune on a brand new pair of front tyres. My current rears have got loads of tread left.

What do you guys think of part-worn tyres and how much do you think it would cost for 2 185/55/15's? I can take my spare wheel in tomorrow, get a tyre fitted, swap that with the wheel with the bulge and get that one replaced the day after.

Or should I swap the rears over to the front and have my almost bald tyres (about 1mm of tread left) on the rear?

Cheers.

Cheers for the reply Lopez. Yeah, I suppose I could scam someone out of a set of steelies for the day. The car should be lowered by then too so it won't be all bad :D

It's a good job I live closer to work now. Only have to drive 4 miles to work on the tyre instead of 10 miles of motorway.

El, you're not heading down that way soon are you? ;)

Hmmm, that's interesting James. I know of several tyre places nearby so will hopefully stop off on the way to work tomorrow.

If I can leave the spare with them and pick it up after work and switch again, leaving them with the wheel with the bulge... ahhh the joys of actually being able to afford to have things replaced :)

Phantom, yep, I do plan to have them sorted ASAP. When I get the new wheels, I'm going to get the car tracked and wheels balanced too.

Now that is a plan Firestar! :D

I'm well up for Silverstone. Should have the car just as I want it (mechanically) wise by then. Trying to set up a convoy too as I know I'd just get lost.

Hmmm, might check the breakers then, but I'd have the fun of locating wheel nuts for the steelie and also having to dispose of it when it's purpose was fulfilled.

3) personal insult, ban him mods please. :p

P.S 3000 posts woo

1. No, I'm supposed to be 'saving'
2. Pft, 2 hours of 70-80mph driving... tyre gets hot... bulge expands... tyre explodes... worst case, goodbye car
3. Sorry, I edited my post earlier as I didn't want people to know the truth :p :D

edit... haha, I just noticed you typed point 3 in by yourself. You need to learn how to spell ;)

Anyway, stop this whoring!

Can't leave you guys alone for a minute can I? :p

Right, I'm getting these wheels with Eagle F1's for a touch over £100. The tyres have done under 1000 miles and if I bought the same size tyres brand new, it would cost me over £160 for 4. That's before fitting.

I could get lower profile 15's for £35 a corner I think, but would still have to pay for fitting.

I'm pretty sure if I put the spare tyre on the front, even though both fronts are almost bald, they'd get me to Wales and back. If I did happen to get stopped by the police I could just point out the 4x h000ge tyres on my back seat.

edit... Another reasoning behind the new wheels, is that I can then take mine off the road and get them refurbished.

 Thanks for that Nick!

I was actually going to take the car to be tracked/balanced/aligned after I had the Eagle's fitted as you're right, I don't want to have to replace those things on a regular basis.

Damn your stupid exams btw :p I'll have to catch Jon on MSN and see if he can make it... has he moved yet?

Wow this thread has gone OT.

I'm up for it, even if it is my B'day!

Ohhh, a birthday meet... sounds cool :D

Nick, where abouts in Wales mate? I could be up for it. Got to put my suspension, new tyres and strut braces up for a good pasting ;)

Anyway, went out this lunch time to get a few quotes for tyres... the first place I tried didn't do part worns but quoted me £55 for each tyre. I asked him if they were budget tyres to which he responded, "they're Nankangs which are a good tyre".

:o If he thinks Nankang are GOOD, then I hate to think what he thinks as bad.

Got one more place to try after work.

LOL, they sound like my current tyres then.

Good in the dry (in fact, having very little tread, they're superb - almost slicks) but in the wet they're ridiculous.

The other night, even setting off at 1,700rpm I was spinning the wheels  And locking the wheels when I had to brake hard on the motorway was ******* scary!

Right, went today before work... left one of the tyres with a garage owned by two brothers.

Taking the other one down in my lunch hour.

£25 each for some Continential 195/55/15's fitted and balanced. Can't complain. They've got quite a bit of tread left on them too, so it'll be good to see how long these ones last ;)
