I seem to remember I can partition a Vista HDD without losing any data, even if it's the main HDD?

Thing is I can't remember if this function is built into Vista or whether I need to download a third party program.

Thanks in advance

You can shrink an existing partition using Disk Management in Vista but it's not the best implementation - it can only shrink the partition if there is contiguous free space at the end of the partition. Therefore you could have 500Gb free on a 1Tb disk but if there's a block of data at the 999Gb mark Vista will only let you shrink it by 1Gb.

Third party tools like GParted combine a defragger with the partition manager so can move any offending data out of the way first.
