Hi, as title really and am really quite annoyed. Maybe I shouldn't have used this software and should've done it during a Windows install.

But I was simply merging 2 partitions together, then got a "file allocation access violation" error and now I can't access either of those partitions. It's a joke really as I have literally everything on there and probably my fault for not making back-ups.

Is this a common problem with this software? What's best way of recovering from this disaster?

Yikes. Bad luck. Never had this problem myself but then I haven't used it in a few years. Perhaps a Linux Live CD will let you see what the partitions are like and perhaps also have some data recovery apps?

Well, I'm running chkdsk /r ? That should recover the data shouldn't it? I've been browsing the Internet to check for solutions... It's a joke, as I have over 100GB of data within the drive. I would never have played about with the partitions within Windows if I didn't have so much data to back up onto DVDs.

All my University work, development, CV and other important documents were on there including a load of media.  :(

I think your best bet is to look at the drives from a Linux machine to see what it can see. Burn off any files you can salvage.

That's a nightmare mate. Best of luck. :)

Hmm not sure what chkdsk does. Just thinking a Linux Live CD will run without writing itself to the disk so you won't lose anything that way. I think some of them can let you browse your disk as well looking for files.

funnily enough the exact same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I was merging two partitions together as I was selling computer to a family member. I ended up loosing 80gb worth of data on a single partition. I havent touched the computer since, just stuck to my trusty lapto!

very bad move whenever something like this happens nothing that carrys out write operations should be performed on the damaged disk. You want to hook up another drive thats big enough to store the data you want then run a file recovery program.
