About to do a fresh install of XP. Previously installed os on a 20gb partition which I think was a mistake as continually running out of space on C: and pc is so slow.

My PC has three hard drives. 2 x 160gb SATA and 1 x 300gb IDE.

My plan is to have 1 x 160gb drive for OS and all programmes. 1 X 160gb drive for documents, music and photos and 1 x 300gb drive for Video.

I have a 500gb external drive to archive photos to so only keep last couple of years woth on internal hd.

Is this sensible?

Sounds fine to me. However it would probably be better to keep all your photos on your PC and your external hard drive as a backup (or burn them to disc).

I agree with Pho. You shouldn't use your external drive as a primary location for your photos. One spilled coffee or nudge off the desk and bye bye photos!

Using your external as a backup you can put it away somewhere safe until you need to make fresh backups.

That said, if you intend to backup the contents of the external HDD elsewhere then ignore what I just said :D

Make sure those are in a safe place! And periodically check they actually work. A backup is useless if you can't recover from it! :)
