My Dad's PC is having a little trouble, getting a lot of problems and is in need of a re-install of windows, now let me fill you in on the background;

He has an acer which has a restore partition, some time ago he needed to reinstall windows and as he had no disk with the pc he used my sister's laptop vista disk. I explained how the restore partition worked but as he had installed another version of windows it would not longer boot from it, I fiddled about and changed the partition so the restore software was able to do it's thing, it restored the pc and everything worked ok.

Now however the restore function has stopped working, not only that but in the disk manager it now shows the partition as empty and I cannot do anything with it. Right clicking brings up no menu, other partitions work fine. Diskpart doesn't see it either.

Anyone have any ideas what happened to the partition?

Oh and in closing, anyone had an experience with windows firewall shutting itself off on boot?

It was easily fixed, I just booted into an ubuntu livecd and it saw and let me edit the partition fine, changed it to bootable and everything is fine.

Always like to make sure I put the resolution in these kinds of threads because I get sick of googling problems only to find millions of threads which never say whether they got it fixed and how :)
