Hi guys
I want to half my 2nd HDD, currently empty at 1000gb. Is it okay just to use the software included within windows to do this or should I be looking at other software like Partition Manager?

Also would you suggest making smaller partitions to help with defragging in future or keep at 500gb each?

Cheers :)

If your 1TB HDD is just for storage (ie your not going to be running programs/games from) I see no point in partitioning it; as when you create a folder on it, that in itself is a "kind of" partition in that it is a simple container for your data...

If you are going to run games form it the along with storing of date, then make a partition for your games and a separate partition for storage, you should be able to do this from within Disk Management in Win 7, choose the function to Shrink volume etc...otherwise you could use PartedMagic (contains gParted).

I would only defrag a partition from which I was running programs/games from, would bother defragging a volume that was just used to store data, so no point in in having more that 2 partitions on your 1TB HDD...

I'm sure others will have other suggestions...

You've gave me more to think about jbloggs :) My main drive, an 80Gb SSD would contain Windows 7, Photoshop, few other bits. Then my proposed 500Gb partitions would be for 1/Games & 2/Storage stuff. Maybe I should just try to stick all my Programs & games on the SSD, nothing major, just older stuff like Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 and do as you say, leave the 1000Gb alone for storage.
Thanks for your time.

PS. Just going though your free software thread (thanks)
