Hi All, bought this as a runner alongside my other cars.
Has full VW service history had timming belt done 3K miles ago, has 70,000 on clock.

Just wondering if i need to keep any eye out on anything or get anything done to avoid any issues later, have heard the water pumps are comon pains on these?

I have tried to Reg on the VW Passat forums but dont get the activation mail, so i thought id ask here instead!

Thanks in advance for any help!

PS please dont post saying "why did you get a VW Passat you should have got the mondeo!!"

There are good cars in general

Sticky 'vanes' on the Turbo is fairly common after certain age / mileage.

You tend to start getting boost surge and then some people complain that the car doesn't go over a certain speed.

But just do regular oil changes and use good quality oil.

Check to see how dry the passenger footwell is...

The Comfort control unit lives under there and if (as happens) water makes its way from around the battery compartment into the unit, electronics such as door locks will start to act eccentrically.

Can't think of any corrosion issues

Damn fine transport all in all :-)

What goes wrong with the EGR Valves?

As I'm sure you can run with out it? People even sell by pass pipes / kits.

Same with the CAT - If it's screws up... it's fine... you can run without one :)

It sends some of the exhaust gas back into the intake, which in turn leads to the thing getting stuffed with oil and such, not good for an engine.

Yea there are kits out there etc, (done some googling) but apparently its not to hard to take it out, clean all the carbon off it and put it back in yourself...

Seems as above, as long as i change oil often and service its a winner.

Just looked at a remap...

Before Remap:Power 130bhp, Torque 228lbft

After Remap:Power 185bhp, Torque 310lbft

Hmmmmmm

Remap is worth it, I have the same engine in my Skoda and the EGR threw a CEL this weekend, probably just needs cleaning, they can get really tarred up. This light went out this morning though whist on the way to get it sorted so i just went back home.
You can get remove/delete pipes but you have to have the CEL mapped out as they bring it on.

just make sure the pollen filter housing is nicely sealed, water can get inside to the passenger footwell making it soaking wet. Make sure its had all the recalls done, there should be one for the plenum chamber, where they take a bung out from under the battery tray as they get blocked up for a past time !

It's a TD?

And? Do you honestly thing if it was possible to get 185bhp from a PD with any sort of reliability then VW would have done it in the first place.

I'm sure it's possible, but I wouldn't want to remap beyond 150ish

Mine makes 150bhp stock

If you're getting up to 185bhp, I'd be looking at uprating things like the brakes. It already has a 6 speed 'box so on that front there's no reason why it can't be done.

A friend has a Golf TDI 150 and he looked into a 130 one first as it was cheaper but there is more to the 150 version than just a remap.

Afaik it has different injectors, possibly a different turbo.

Which is why I wouldn't want to go past 150 with a remap, if vw thought different internals were necessary then I'm sure they're right. Otherwise they could have made a lot more money from the 150s by just slapping a different map on

Please could you post a link to the differences in the internals of the PD130 vs PD150 (thats actually a serious question cause i don't know the difference myself).

Revo claim the PD130 will remap to 170bhp, i've got no reason to dispute these numbers, clearly a remap will run the engines components closer to the manufacturing tolerances, VW et all manufactures build in a nice safety margain to all cars components to limit warranty claims, aid reliability and brand image.

Just because VW might have changed some things on the PD150 doesn't mean the PD130 won't remap well over 150bhp without issue.

I don't have a link, I'm just going on what I heard some years back when I looked into them myself. I'm sure someone will find something though, im pretty confident there are mechanical differences.

Either way, with modern diesels being relatively complicated, I don't like to risk it personally. If I wanted a passat with a diesel engine but more than 130bhp, I'd buy a 150 (if such a thing exists, don't think ive seen one actually) or the v6
