On my actual driving test as I drove into the test centre to finish, the lights went to amber just as I was about three car lengths from them. I actually began an emergency stop before deciding to let the brakes off and go on through. When I pulled in to the test centre and parked, the instructor told me "had you completed that emergency stop at those lights I would have failed you, but well done you have passed".
This may seem like an unrelated scenario but the reality is it's fine to go through an amber light, BUT NOT a read light. So really there is no excuse when caught in this scenario. The lights going amber mean stop safely and NOT gun it to beat the red. Ironically most people just end up breaking the speed limit to beat the red light.
Though one time I kept going at amber as I was making it fine just before the light went red. I didn't realise the traffic police were a few cars back and I got the blue flashing lights. The officer slowly walked to my window and said, "do you realise you broke a read light sir"? I respectfully and politely aplogised and told him that I saw it was still amber as I drove through but that obvioulsy I was preparred to take his word for it, along with the evidence from both his police car camera and my own dashcam. He saw my dashcam and walked away muttering "You were lucky this time because I have no traffic tickets left". Yeah right, a traffic cop with no traffic tickets and nothing to do with you being a douchebag who got caught in your BS.
