Hi

I have a coolermast extreme power 650w psu.

To be honest the drone of it does my head in.

Is there such a thing as a passive cooled PSU?

I was round at a mates and he was using an iMAC which was blissfully silent!!

jup. they exist, but not for 650w ratings. asuming your pc isnt stacked, and that your not overclocked like a loon, they should cope however. there are a variety of modles arroudn the 300-400w rating. antec did sell a 500w one, but that had a fan for higher load levels. shop about. and maybe invest in a plugin wattage meter. if your psu is drawing less than say, 300w loaded from the wall you should be ok with a 350w unit (strictly a 300would be fine also, or even a 250 - as 300 wall wats is less than 300 dc-side load watts, which is hwo psu's are rated but some headroom is wise!)

you could just buy an over-rated PSU with active fan control...lol

it's amazing how quiet a 1000W PSU is when only drawing 400W ;) :D

The Antec Phantom is good, as long as it fits in your case and you don't stress it too much

You should remember that iMacs are fabricated out of what are essentially laptop components...

As posted above, there is no need for a 1.2kW PSU in a modern system... even a modern, high-end gaming system.

There is a common misconception that modern systems need 500W+ PSUs. This is not the case in the vast majority of systems. Don't take my word for it - http://www.behardware.com/art/imprimer/670/

im fully aware of this. i believe my advice remains valid however:

find out how many watts you actually need:
get a psu to suit with some headroom. especially if your running it passive...

and realise also, OP has no spec in sig, so it could be a overclocked FX74 (dual cpu, dual core) with 2 hd2900xt's in xfire and 16 hdd's.. which really would warrent a 600+w psu.

Your advice is perfectly correct, I was just adding that link to reinforce your point.

I did my own testing on an outrageously overclocked Pentium D system with an 8800 gfx card as I was wondering if my old 480W PSU was still going to cut the mustard. To my surprise I couldn't make the system draw more than 280W continuously.

1.2KW PSUs are for people with clear sided cases with neon lights :)
