Passive graphics = quiet pc!

Hey guys,

I'm using a passively cooled 8400GS atm whilst my 2900XT is being rma'd and I'm finding it amazing how much the noise level from my pc has been reduced since the 2900XT’s absence :)

I still have 6x 120mm yate loon case fans and a 120mm enermax psu fan going all the time, but now all I seem to notice is the noise of my hard drives!

Its probably a silly question because I realise that the 2900XT is going to be running a lot hotter than the 8400GS, but are there any passive (apart for wc) cooling options available for the XT, or soon, the 4850/4870? Failing that, what about quieter alternatives to the standard cooling for the XT/4850/70?

I'm really starting to enjoy the quietness of my machine now  ;)

I don't really want to go down the wc'ing road - passive seems easier ;)

Would something like this be any good? Doesn't mention it requiring any additional fans etc.

With 6 case fans it's definitely worth a shot.

I cool my CPU and graphics card with the same 5V fan like this:

I can't hear it. So if it doesn't work you could always try a very low-speed fan.

Cool. Out of interest what is that heatsink you have on your gfx?

I'm fairly sure my case (slightly out of date pic) would be able to handle such a hs :)

I think you'll find the 2900XT was just excessively loud. Given the number of fans you already have, I would imagine you'll find any reasonably quiet (ie. not top end, but still good) GPU pretty much 'silent'.

It cools my HD4850 fine with a Sharkoon 120mm fan cable tied to it - its fiddly to fit though, as the RAM heatsinks kept falling off & I had to hack off a bit of the VRM heatsink in order for it to fit over the VRM's - even then I had to put a rubber band around the card to make sure the VRM sink stays on. A bit Heath Robinson but it works.

also as the gfx your using now doesnt use extra power connectors, it doesnt load the PSU as much, my enermax gets noisy with the PCIe connectors plugged in, but if i use another gfx that doesnt use power connectors, its silent

Stuck a HR03 on my XT with a 120mm yateloon. Got 3 other yate loons and a noctua on the HSF, all under volted via a fan controller. Pretty quiet.
