Before I pulled my 146 out of my system I wanted to see how flexible it was and had a go at undervolting the chip at stock speeds and managed to reduce the voltage to just over 0.9v with it still being prime stable at 2ghz.
At the time it was still cooled actively by a heatsink fan and I didn’t take note of its load temps. Now its been replaced by my dual opty I've been contemplating the feasibility of using it in a silent htpc running xp mc passively cooled with a single case fan providing airflow.
Has anyone cooled an undervolted a64 cpu passively before?
Would be cool to get some input.

Cheers

It is certainly possible, especially as you're managing under 1v on the chip.

I remember a while back on XS someone ran a 3000 without any heatsink, but I can't find the thread right now.

ive ran my opty 144 with just the heatsink part of a vapochill micro (without the fan) for a while, got a bit toasty 60+ load but that was at 2.8ghz with 1.65v :p

No heat sink at all!! The man must have been crazy :)

Mr Mister that’s pretty helpful, I guess those vapochill micro hs are pretty efficient!
It defiantly seems feasible.

Custom pc used the scythe ninja to passively cool an overvolted fx-55 running at 2.8, im sure it could cool an opteron 146 quite easily.

I can run my 3700 Passive on my sythe ninja, did it for about an hour with light usage and temps were below 40 :p
With a voltage like that you could deffinatly use a ninja, don't think it would work as well with other coolers and they aren't designed to run passive. I fully recomend the ninja if it will fit, lol. Have mine with a 120mm amber and it really is SILENT, can hear it with fan 100% but that gives me idle temps low 20's and loads low 30's. Had a CPU temp of 18 when i accidentally left the window open all night

What type of case are you thinking of using? Ninja is 15cm high so might fit in some of the silverstone LC series cases.

Sandmaster500, that’s a good point! the ninja hs is huge and not really an option for me as I will be using a very slim case. I can probably pull the vcore down to around 0.8v and run it around 1.8ghz, speed isn’t essential as I'm only going to be encoding tv and playing back hdtv video. Im sure a decent Thermalright will do the job.

thanks for the replies guys.
