passively cooled C2D???

cant the scythe ninja not passively cool a e6300? or am i thinking of a different cooler?
The Scythe Ninja can easily passively cool an E6300, I did so myself at 2.8GHz for a while.

Not recommended if you have poor airflow through your case though.

hmm so at stock speeds it should be fine.

are their any other coolers around that'd do the job? as the sythe maybe a bit tall for what i need

Just curious, but won't some (if not most) mobos refuse to boot with no CPU fan plugged in? Or do you plug-in the chassis fan in its place?

some def do tha ti know of, and yeah ususally just plug in a case fan so its fine. after all if its going to be passive i will need at least some airflow

Well in regards to mobo not starting without fans attached, I can say that my p5w DH has always booted nicely without any fans attached to it at all. I am running it water cooled and the case fans are attached to a fan controller.

The pump on my watercooling system has a long 3 pin connector to connect to the CPU fan port, suppose just in case u had no other 3 pin fans in your case.

If nothing is plugged in to mine then the pc beeps like crazy and doesnt boot, handy really.

I just put together a system with an e4300 / arctic cooling freezer 7 pro / antec 900

When I first switched the machine on the CPU fan didn't come on at all. Temperatures in TAT were 30 for both cores. I benched it using 3d6 and still the cpu fan never came on! Nothing errored. This was at stock.

I can only imagine that because there was a 120 fan just behind the cooler and a 200mm directly above it this wass providing enough air so that the cpu fan didn't have to come on?

I have since changed the settings in bios to legacy and PWM mgt for the cpu fan. I am overclocking it now so I didn't want any trouble from a potentially overheating cpu.

Still it was effectively air cooled. Very quiet, though got to say I can barely notice the difference with the cpu fan on in terms of noise.

Aye, absolutely normal since Intel automatic fan control and speedstep technology would've been on, which keeps temps and CPU stress in general to a minimum.

When overclocking it would be ideal to turn both off, but for stock use they're great. :)
