we are thinking of going to spain for a holiday, now my mums' passport expires in july, we went on holiday this time last year and the airline (first choice) were just about to kick up a fuss because there was less than 6mos on the passport until they noticed it was 2006.

Is the passport going to be ok for travel to spain?

As far as I know, as long as the passport doesn't expire while you're in Spain, there should not be any problem.

While there's no legal requirement to have 6 months left on your passport some airlines won't let you fly unless you have.

I was worried about this when I moved to Australia as I only had 1 month left on my passport. The advice the british embassy gave me was to e-mail the airline company and embassy of he country you're visiting and ask them the question. Then print out their replies and take them with you. That way you're covered no matter what.
