Passport Required?

My partner wants to taker her Grandad to Ireland for 2 days in August but he does not have a passport. Its an easy jet flight to Belfast from Newcastle, we have been told that a standard photo ID will suffice, is this true? If so where do you get them, or is a full passport needed?

Ok but he has no driving licence either, what can be used that cheaper than a full passport?
