A mates PC had a virus, after removal it destroyed file associations. CCleaner fixed this, however when running .exe files it requires user name and password every time.

Any input?

Thanks

If a virus has caused any issues after removing it i tend to just reinstall the os and you dont know what else it has done.

What version of windows is it?

A great tool for fixing permissions/policys and cleaning malware is combofix.

I've used this on pc's at work, family's pc's and my own and found it to do the job pretty much every time. I vaguely remember one of the pc's prompting for a password when opening exe's as well and this sorted it so its worth a shot.

Run it in safe mode first and see how it goes then try it when windows is booted normaly.

Combofix is often over looked but I find it to be a very handy tool indeed :)

Running XP.
AVG removed the virus which come through a facebook app. All trojans are gone, it just then stoped any files from opening. CCleaner fixed this, it just needs a password to running any .exe file now.

I'll give combofix a go.

mind if i jump in?

had a virus infection on a communal laptop. OS is shot, long story, but theres some data on the hdd I could do with pulling. Problem is whenever I try to access folders on the drive (when in a caddu on another machine) I get a pop up saying password prtoected, unable to open or something.

Sounds similiar to OP, any thoughts?
